Hello,

My wifes' 2000 Accord has a constant 'check engine' light that won't
reset. It came on two days ago right after she filled up with gas (not
my wife - I meant the gas tank :-)) The car starts and functions
normally and drives like the day it was purchased - but the light
remains on. I took it to my mechanic and he read the code for me -
P1456. I did some Googling which led me to believe that the gas cap
might be at fault. I replaced the gas cap today but the check engine
light is still on. Is there a way to reset it without losing the dreaded
Honda anti-theft radio code? Also, is the most likely cause of the P1456
code actually a bad gas cap? My wife tells me that she has never
tightened the cas cap until it clicked for fear that she wouldn't be
able to get it back off again - even though it says to do just that on
the cap itself... women... cars.... don't get me started. Thanks in
advance for any help anyone can offer.

Yes - the light will go off by itself after a certain number of warm-up
cycles. Give it a few days, up to a week with regular use. BTW - there
really aren't any "check engine" codes that indicate a condition that
requires you to stop driving if the engine seems okay otherwise. Some could
indicate a potentially rich condition that could damage the catalytic
converter if pushed hard on the freeway, but around town or gentle freeway
driving is no problem.

The gas cap needs to be tightened until it clicks at least three times.

It was the gas cap - it just took a few days for the check light to go
out. Thanx for the responses.

Turn off the ignition and remove the #13 fuse from the passenger-door side
fuse box (the 7.5 Amp one for the clock). This will reset your "Check
Engine" light on your honda accord.
