01 ody tranny going out for 3rd time?
Hello, I have a 01 LX that at 48k miles tranny was replaced. At 53k the
2nd one was installed because of bad noise . Now at 68k miles the tranny
is slipping badly around 40 mph or going up a hill. Also feels like you
are holding the brake and accerating at the same time. Last night made a
awful sound (like a flat tire) and of course the dealer cant duplicate
the symtoms. I had a complete brake job doe today including new calipers
and when I pulled out of dealer started slipping around 40mph. Did not
even bother turning around and taking it back beause I knew what I would
be told "wait until it tears up and then we can fix it" Yeah I like the
ideal of my wife and twins breaking down between here and the grandmas
or any other 200 mile trip. This is my first ever Honda product and have
not been impressed. I traded a very bad Toyota Sienna in on this thing
and it as been worse. Maybe the Jap mini vans dont like me. The Honda
and Toyota are supposed to be the best but not for me! Thanks for the
rant.

I wouldn't want a cardiologist with that attitude, but in the auto
warranty replacement biz, I guess it's to be expected . . :-)

I have heard that Honda can't build a good auto transmission before. How do
their 5 speeds hold up. I'm looking to buy a 2001 5 speed that I found for
sale.

The 5-speed automatics are the ones that had enough problems to initially
prompt the warranty extensions and recalls. I have not heard of any
particular problems with the 5-speed manuals.

Re: 01 ody tranny going out for 3rd time?
The 97-01 Prelude 5spd transmission has some known problems. The 5th
gear synchros, the shift arm, the release bearing (or throw-out bearing,
whatever you want to call it) all fail sooner or later. While each can
be pretty expensive to fix, none are a catastrophic failure that will
leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere.
The release bearing on my 01 Prelude SE with only 43k km has been
getting noisier for the past 10k km, but it still works. I'll be getting
it replaced under warranty as soon as I have some time.
