when to change cam belt 1998 honda civic had done 56000 miles?

Can't be model specific, sorry, but as a general rule of the thumb it is advisable to change your cam belt between 30-40k.In an ideal world cam belts should be constructed of metal much like the chain of a bike but as in all things cheapness wins out and rubber takes the day. Absolute bu66er when they snap though.

It should be done every 60k miles or 5 years whichever comes first. But if you live or operate at extreme conditions you may want to change your belt at earlier intervals. Do not forget to take the opportunity to change the water pump at the time you change the timing belt, as the new belt will put more tension on the water pump bearing causing the old pump to leak shortly after the new timing belt is installed. Hope this helps..
