What does it mean if a car has a lot of engine corrosion under the hood on the...

...aluminum of the engine? Its a Honda civic with 160k miles on it with white flaky stuff on the metal surfaces. What does this mean? The mechanic said it is from the car sitting a lot and it being parked near a salty beach like area.
