My honda civic Si Hatch makes a noise when it turns over?
I recently had the starter replaced. The previous starter had burned and I had lots of wiring problems with the car. The car used to be a push start, but I asked my mechanic to make it a conventional turn key again, and he did. Never the less, now when I turn the key there is this pretty ugly 'screetching' sound that seems to come from the starter. The car turns over and it's fine after that, but the noise worries me specially when the starter is suppossed to be a new replacement. I want to find out what's the problem and get my mechanic to fix it. Someone had mentioned that it could be some kind of sensor, I don't know. I have managed to start the car without the noise when I turn the key first and slightly push the clutch, and quickly release it after that. Thank you very much for your answers.

hey,I had a similar problem before and that's what i used to hear, on my car the problem was the "solenoid" would not release the contact gear quick enough after the car started. i don't have a civic, but this heppened when the solenoid was integrated with the starter, i don't know if yours is integrated. buabother thing to check is if the started needed shims to line up the gear to the flywheel when activated, such that if it's not lined up, it would probably stick to the fly wheel a but after you start the car.But definitely a flywheel to starter gear issue.hope it helps

There are only two possibilities. The starter which you say is a new starter. The other is the fly wheel, which might explain why pushing the clutch and releasing the pressure on the fly wheel might relieve the noise. I would suggest that you have the clutch replaced in the car, a normal repair shop will inspect the fly wheel and replace it if needed or have it milled if it is in good condition and within limits. The reason I say replace the clutch is that if you have not had the clutch replaced any time within the last couple of years, this will save you from having to pay for the same labor again in the near future also the fly wheel is mounted in line with the clutch and also gives the technician a chance to inspect the starter for possible damage that can be caused by the fly wheel if it is bad.
