My 1995 honda civic just stopped running. Towed it to a mechanic and they said the cam shaft is broken.. They dont do that kind of work. So now i have to tow it some place else. I called around and they said it would cost about $1200 but they need to see it ... Just wondering if it's worth it to keep having this car towed around or should i try to invest in something else.. The car has about 193,000 miles on it. but it's really my 18 year old daughters car for her to get back and forth to school and stuff .

Do you trust this mechanic? It sounds more like a timing belt issue than a broken camshaft. A timing belt will probably be about half that price.

I was thinking about £500 which is $1000 it could be done cheaper if you had a mechanical mate who may source a 2nd hand one from a scrap yard but I think its probably better putting serious money in a newer car, Honda along with most Japanese co's make good motors but this means higher prices if you cant afford that Id look at cars from Kia or Hyundai often these have a 5 or 7 year manufactuers warranty.

There's a very good chance that the broken camshaft caused other damage as well: Valves and pistons and metal polution of the oil come to mind.

I'd find her a good '95 or '96 Ford Escort instead of throwing money at the Honda. Those Escorts are practically unbreakable. My '91 had 260,000+ on it when I sold it 6 years ago and it's still on the road. The only failure it has was the alternator. My '96 has 127,000 on it and is just now needing normal wear items. And it gets 43 mpg.
