Should I replace the AC in my Honda Accord?
I have a '96 Accord that has 183K miles on it. It has a new radiator, and it gets 35mpg. Should I just replace the AC for $1000 or is it too risky that the car may crap out on me in less than a year?
O yeah...and I'm on a college student's budget. A college student with a part time job....
I went to the mechanic and my compressor is busted. And because it is an older model car, the entire AC unit has to be replaced. The estimate is about $898...so I assume I'll pay around $1000. The freakin parts are only $200...but it takes so long to do that it's $700 in labor. Grrr...
I live in Louisiana. It was 93 today. probably 70% humidity. Only 1 window works.

$1000?
Please update/edit your question if you can give a better description of what will be replaced?
Normally it is just the compressor that needs replacing. That runs about $350 for your car. It takes about 2 hours to replace. That might be $160 labor. Maybe $60 worth of freon. So that is less then $570.
Where is the other $430 coming from?
If the car runs well I am sure it will go for 200,000 miles. You no the history of the car. Better then buying a $2000 car that you have no idea about just because it has working a/c.
.....that new info help, great!!!
The few seals that you need to convert cost a couple dollars.
Find a shop that will just replace the compressor, seals, and charge the system.
Take the old compressor back to the $1000 shop and throw it through thier window.
