How do I know that my break power booster needs replacing?

I have a 1984 honda accord and well I just took off the master cylinder and there was a lot of fluid in the power booster is there suppose to be? Before I took it off everytime I pressed on the break it would shut off my car. Yes I know that, that would be vacuums but Someone told me to take all the stuff off to see if there was a leak. So here is my question how do I know that there is a leak? also Is there a way of fixing it with out buying a nother one?

Thanks
