shop to flow a set of heads?
#3
Took them to a shop that specializes in V8's. They have a Superflow 1200, bench/computer setup. Great service, 2nd day turnaround, fair price. Highly recommend!

Got graphs of intake/exhaust CFM vs Valve lift. Spec sheet detailing at what RPM it will "run of of breath", est power per cylinder, optimum intake runner length, exhaust/intake CFM ratio, Potential flow vs Actual.
Hope this helps others. If you want, tell them Pete with the VW reffered you.

I do this every couple/few years for some cheap insurance. The heads have alot of work into them, P&P matched to intake, bigger valves/seats, that run high spring pressures through ratio rockers and a big cam. So why wait for a dropped valve/seat, or a loose guide to happen? Taking it apart for inspection, is what might save a expensive rebuild or having to start from scratch.
It's a hobby, and i enjoy building/playing with it.

Actually, when you said that you "have the heads off for some maintenance", the type of car does have something to do with it. If you had said that your heads had that much work in them in the earlier post, I would have understood and I wouldn't have had to ask my original question. Because I didn't know what type of car it was, or that it was your Bug, I asked my question. But it makes sense now that I know which car it is. Usually people don't have cylinder head removal as part of a maintenence schedule... unless you've got a really hot engine like you do, or a Mk3 Supra.

Cool, i guess i missunderstood. I get alot of the "why bother?" or "just get a honda/nissan/stang..etc replies off the 'net, most of the time.
Its back together again, running in the cylinders/rings. I should bring it by a meet, it's been a while. I'm thinking of taking it out to the track up here again. Went to St. Thomas a couple years ago at a battle of the imports event. Everything was cool untill they sprayed the track with VHT for eliminations. I broke a output shaft, biting the pavement, coming out of a burnout. I've mostly run/shown the car in the states.
This is what i did this time around: I freshen'd it up with new cylinders, Childs & Albert Zgap 2nd's, oil pump, 2 exhaust guides, lapped in the valves/seats, and new chromo rocker studs. I try to pull it every couple of years.
here's a peak, all cleaned up going back together:

I don't know much about aircooled VW's but you have a nice car. I've seen it at the etob meet last year. It looks good, and I think u mentioned it should be making about 270 crank hp.
Just out of curiosity, how much did the heads flow?

I don't think i've ever said a number, 'cause I don't know. I'm thinking of putting it on the rollers this summer, so we'll see. I'm sure it's pretty square with the torque.
They flowed 260, valve @ .600, with the intakes and stacks.

260cfm is crazy tho, especially on 2v head...and .600 lift What kinda duration/lft cams are you running?
My 2L 16v head should only flow about 220-230 at .450 with a mild porting, but I have a little snail pushing the air thru the ports
