Exclamation Do You Own One Of The Most Stolen Cars In Canada?

Do you own a 1999 or a 2000 Honda Civic SiR?

If so, do you know where it is right now?

The question is being asked because for the fourth year in a row, that model of automobile is the most stolen car in the country. The 2000 version tops the chart on the Insurance Bureau of Canada's annual list of most stolen cars in Canada in 2008.

Unlike previous years, there are only a few luxury cars in the top 10, primarily because thieves and chop shops can now make more money from parts or selling lower models as getaway vehicles that can be easily abandoned in other crimes. The higher end models, like the 2001 Audi TT Quattro Roadster, are less likely to be dismantled and more apt to be shipped to buyers overseas.

But there are other cars on the list that might surprise you - like the 1996 Dodge/Plymouth Neon.

"I'm sure a lot of people with decade-old Neons don't think that anybody would want to steal their car, but this shows that thieves aren't just interested in new or high-value vehicles," explains the Bureau's Rick Dubin. "These older vehicles are easier to steal, they have no approved anti-theft electronic immobilizers, and there are so many of them on the road that a stolen one can just blend in. That's why they tend to be used to commit other crimes."

The Bureau recommends you safeguard your car with auto theft prevention systems. Built-in immobilizers are becoming standard on even lower end models, preventing the vehicle from being driven without the proper matching key.

And they're urging owners to be aware of where they leave their cars, especially at night, suggesting well lit, well traveled streets or parking lots are preferable to dark and secluded spaces. Not leaving packages or objects out to tempt thieves is another good deterrent.

And beware of warm-up thefts, where you try to get your car ready for a cold winter day by leaving it running in the driveway while you wait inside. It takes a thief only seconds to get in the door, put it in reverse and drive it away.

Top Ten Stolen Vehicles In Canada 2008

8. 1995 Acura Integra 2-door
9. 1996 Dodge/Plymouth Neon 2-door
10. 1996 Dodge/Plymouth Neon 4-door

Not on the list but also prime targets: the Hummer H2, the Cadillac Escalade, the Lexus RX350, the BMWX5, the Mercedes Benz GL450, the Lincoln MKX and the Toyota RAV4.

"Vehicles like these are often stolen to order by organized crime rings, and shipped to places like West Africa and the Middle East, where they are well-suited to the terrain," advises Dubin. He adds that the recovery rate of stolen cars in general continues to decline, meaning you may not see your wheels again once they're gone.

It's no small problem. Statistics Canada estimates there were more than 146,000 cars stolen in 2007, at a cost of $542 million to insurance companies - averaging out to an extra $35 in your premiums.

B.C. is the place with the most car thefts in Canada. Ontario and the Maritimes have the fewest.

So if your car isn't the most stolen, could it be the least taken? Here's that list.

LOL What kinda bad crack are these idiots on? Must be pretty desparate for a hit if you steal one of those. IDK maybe the owners of these realize what POS they own and leave them running and unlocked with big neon signs saying " take me please" Maybe the guys stealing these think nobody is going to look as hard for these as they do for say the Hondas and Acuras? Just pisses me off, I hate thieves.

LOl.. has anyone given thought why.. its easy to chop a CIVIC, they are reliable and parts are easy to get and fix.. obviously any shop would falsify those claims and claim theft for insurance reasons.. the c... hence increasing statistical data on the thefts... plus everyone is driving a 99 -2000 civic .. there are just so many around..
