Car insurance for modified cars

I'm looking for people to recommend insurance companies that would insure modified cars. I'm moving from the US to Toronto, and every time I talk to insurance companies, they absolutely wont insure me since its been modified. Who do you people use? Not telling the insurance company that my car is modified is NOT an option for me; I dont want to deal with getting into an accident and potentially not being covered since I wasn't upfront with them. Ideas?

Expect to pay $800/month if you actually get insured with them knowing about mods. Good luck and welcome to ontario.

what car?

91 accord ex-r.

I was pretty suprised when insurance companies told me they couldn't insure me since my car was modified. Here in Michigan it seems like a non-issue. They've just asked me how much $$ I've put into parts, and modify the quote slightly so that its covered. Do you guys really tell your insurance companies that your cars are stock?? I wonder how many people lose their insurance coverage after their car gets wrecked and get $0 reimbursement.

Unless you are boosted or have extravagent mods, don't worry about saying anything...In some cases some companies will want to inspect the car though.

Right and if they want to inspect the car, my insurance would either be cancelled or denied. Although my car is not boosted or heavily modified, I've done enough that several of the insurance companies I've talked to (Pilot, RBC) flat out said they did not want to take on the risk. I'm 27, no accidents, and been insured for 11 years.

Actually you should do what my buddy walker did for 2 years. He came to canada from the USA. He kept his car resitered and insured back in his home state.Never had a problem.

^ Thats a really good idea. Just tell your insurance company in the states that you are going out of the country on business for a few years and that you're bringing your car... see how long you can keep it insured like that for.

My US insurance company said that they do not write insurance in canada, so I would need to switch to a canadian insurance company. I will definitely be living and working in ontario, without any type of residence in the US so keeping my car registered in michigan wont work. From what I've read on a few sites (toronto star, autonet.ca) companies will cancel your coverage if you modify your car and they are made aware of it. (either by you telling them, or they find out after you make a claim.) Either way I dont want to deal with that.

I saw about 1500 cars at Darknights this summer in toronto... are you telling me EVERY insurance company thinks those cars are stock????????
