Personally if the body and paint are in nice shape, and so is the interior it's probably worth it. Replacing and engine is cheap and easy. Most people would dump the 305 anyways or spend money on making it faster. Totally depends on how well the car was maintained. And if the outside and inside look nice, I would bet the guy took care of everything else.
As for $1800 3rd gens, sure they are out there, but they're piles of crap. Nice 3rdgens are hard to find under $5K. You can show me every value guide there is and that doesn't mean **** to me. Those guides were put together for insurance companies so they could throw a lowball figure out in front of someones face when the car is wrecked. They're accurate for cars that are under 10 years old. They take into the assumption that cars can only lose value. 3rdgen prices have been creeping up the last couple years. Just check ebay once and see what people are actually bidding cars up to. Nice cars will always get nice prices. The junk will only go up once everything nice is gone.
That said the car is probably high at $4800. But that's his asking price. I always put my asking price way high on my cars that I've sold and sold for less.

To be perfectly honest I'd probably stick with it as well. It being an 02 you probably have a ton of trouble free years left in it.
3rdgens seem to be project cars (read money pits). Or atleast that's my experience. Yours may vary. lol

You picked the only people more interested in screwing people then the insurance industry - used car salespeople. I know where the values come from, I've been around the car industry my whole life. Going off kbb my car would probably be $1200. You think I'd accept it? I'd sooner light the car on fire with the person offering me that. lol
Yes there were hundreds of thousands of them made, however there aren't that many left in good condition. They were low cost cars for quite a while and every teenager had one and usually destroyed it. You cite your Convert as proof, however you tried selling it 10 years ago. The prices have been going up. I've been watching them. I've got a vested interest in it and scan the online ads, ebay, etc almost weekly to see what's out there. They aren't getting Hemi money, but they aren't getting 86 Cutlass Ciera money either. Even Barret Jackson sold a couple this year at decent price that weren't anything special, and 3rdgens never sell at BJ.
They likely will never be real collector cars, but from what I've seen they bottomed out cost wise. Mainly due to the 2nd gens now being over valued.

you guys also have to remember dealer prices are set so a car sells in less than 90 days, if it takes longer than that the price is too high (90 days is the point where the car starts to eat into dealer profits)
