4.6 dry start up noise ...cold.
This is a Mustang Forum, But the same engine is used in my application.
2003 Crown Vic LX sport with 50K. Cold start up the noise makes me cringe, but does not do it again after the car has been running, and restarted. Even after hours of being off.
The filter is your standard motercraft, and the oil is motercraft 5 w 20 (6 qts).
The car was bought at 36,600 and the noise has been present since the first oil change. BUT.... when changed (changes were always done by the dealer) the oil overfilled the drain pan..... capacity was over 8 qts? I do not remember the car making the noise when I first bought it. I changed the oil 2 days after purchase.
Does anybody have any ideas? is it ok to put 8 qts in it.. as overfilling can be bad. Would this stop the noise that I assume is the bottom end slamming around.
Thank you
Greg

hummm im not sure what your noise is but i would definitly not overfill your oil at all. i drive a cvpi for a living and obviously the oil is changed regularly. i have never had a problem with a noise on a cold start. can you tell if it is in the top end or the bottom end? my suggestion is to change the oil, use good oil, use the correct amount of oil, use a good filter, and use a quart of lucas oil stabilizer. keep in mind the the lucas will replace 1 quart of oil
