DSLR cameras: Nikon or Canon?
Hey all, I'm shopping around for a new DSLR camera and I've narrowed down to the Nikon D60 or D80 or Canon XTi or XSi. Any suggestions? They've both got the features I want and the prices are near the same. Thanks.

Don't get the D60 get the D80 if you go Nikon. I'm biased to Nikon but you'll find if you ever want to get flashes a lot of Canon guys pick up Nikon SB flashes. I have a D40 and 2 SB24 flashes from the 80's that I set off using a wireless remote off ebay, the legit way to go would have been pocketwizards but they are $180 a pop.

That's good advice, thanks. My colleague has the D80 and raves about it, but now she wants the next model up. I think it's easy to get into some serious accessories with these cameras, even for a hobbyist. I will check around and comparison shop some more. How's your D40?

D40 is alright but I hate how it doesn't have a vertical grip. I think the D80 does have an optional one and it like more than doubles the battery time. If I were to upgrade my D40 I'd go for a D200 but for what I'm doing right now D40 is perfectly fine for me but would definitely rather have that vertical grip comes in so handy.

Its all personal preference... go to a store and hold a canon then a nikon... whichever one feels more comfortable to you will probably be the deciding factor on which you buy.
For me I choose nikon and I love it!
Also picked up a SB600 flash and thats a must have if your into photography!

We have 3 Canons in rotation. One sweet thing about the canons is it's life time cleaning for free
However, at my previous place of employment we rocked Nikons. Nikons also seem a bit beefier / heavier. The body of the canons feel light.

Yea I wouldn't look at Olympus or Sony they make good cameras but don't have the 3rd party support in terms of flashes, lenses, etc. Canon and Nikon have tonnes of first party lenses and flashes to choose from. In addition to cheaper third party versions.

Yeah, features, and aftermanrket accesories definitely factored into my decision. My buddy GTX_Simon on here bought an older Nikon D40, 6 megapixel, and it takes amazing pics. Mainly the Liveview feature on the XSi sold me on it, in addition to the availablilty of parts.

My g/f is an avid photographer and swears by Nikons (and has owned/still owns several). However both brands do make quality products (I think Canon makes by far the best happy snaps on the market). If you're just getting into the DSLR game though you'll be pleased either way, Canon makes great entry level DSLRs. Once you get good enough to notice the difference you'll want to upgrade to a 1:1 anyway .
Good luck!
I should also mention invest in some decent photo editing software, Picasa is great for basic stuff but check out Adobe Lightroom, seriously worth the investment.
