A major federal department has temporarily banned the hiring of able-bodied white men in an unusual move critics say could spark a backlash against the very disadvantaged groups it is meant to help.
Managers in the Public Works department must hire only visible minorities, women, aboriginals and the disabled, except with written permission from their superiors, David Marshall, the deputy minister, ordered in an e-mail circulated yesterday.
The policy, designed to address shortfalls in the department's employment-equity goals, will last at least until the end of next March and be reviewed then, the memo said.
"As executives and managers, our role includes ensuring that the public service is representative," Mr. Marshall said in the memo. "This involves providing direction and leadership by example, and demonstrating a firm commitment to an inclusive workplace."
Pierre Teotonio, a department spokesman, said last night the order was prompted in part by a precipitous drop in the number of employees hired from the designated groups this year. The proportion of female, disabled, aboriginal and non-white new hires fell from one in eight this March to only one in 20 by September, he said. The federal benchmark just for the hiring of visible minorities is one in five.
Still, a veteran labour lawyer said yesterday he had never heard of an edict actually barring the recruitment of large numbers of people. And even a federal civil service union that strongly supports employment equity questioned the wisdom of the policy.

I think those people are racist, they use their color of skin to their advantage, to me that's racist. And I'm getting sick of 'em saying how they were enslave and blah blah blah, the Chinese were used as slaves and no one really complaint, I don't hear Jewish people complaint 24-7 about WWII.

only difference is that the chinese and jewish were not sold by their kin as slaves ... and their culture has had a significant impact in the development of the modern world besides generating the need for international charitable organizations ( for just 10 cents a day you can help this young boy get rid of the insects roaming on his face in the hot weather ) ... oh wait , what am i smoking , everyone dresses like Nelly now so i guess , scrape that last remark :Flush:

I dont mind affirmitive action and hiring a person, man woman , white or minority so long as they can do the job. It really makes no sense passing up on someone if they are skilled enuff to do the job to pass them over for someone that cant, that just hinders productivity. But to outright ban a person because they are white is not right (kinda funny tho, but not right).
By the way who put out the memo? Because in an earlier post someone says "I think those people are racists...." Wow , talk about a generaliztion! Sure some may be, but then again some whites are too (you even? Sounds like you have some deep rooted hate). Are you talking about the people that posted the memo or the people that are going to be applying for the job like the aboriginals, the black community, or the disabled?
As far as Jewish and Chinese not complaining , they do, probably not as much. They also have it a little easier not being black and not having to be assoiciated with all the negativity that automatically follows a black person around. Contrary to an earilier post thier has been some contributions from the black community to modern civilization. Plus their fighting for civil rights made it easier for other minorities as well. Being from South American decent (born and raised in Canada, best country in the world) I can appreciate the some of the struggles other minorities have been through, and fought to overcome. Unfortunately , banning any particular race really doesn't do much except create more resentment towards the others that are not banned. Pretty much proven by what I have seen here from the earlier posts. Just my $0.02 .

The chinese prolly do , they came to NA looking for a better , honest life and they were mistreated because they look different .
The jewish i don't know , at the turn of a century , they were like a plague for europe , and not because they smelt or looked different , but just because of their actions .
All in all , the arabs should be complaining now , because the huge sums of money exorted from germany by older jews , are now going to support ethnic cleansing in Palestine , so I'd lower the volume if i were them , not yell out **** at every turn , like a few years back when they ganged up politically on some 70 year old german canadian who suppsoedly had ranks in hitlers party ...

Unfortunately, the underlying fact is that Arab's and Jew's will never be able to get along. They just need to go their separate ways and leave one another alone.
But, on topic.... I don't think its right singling out white males just because there aren't enough skilled minorities to fill the positions. If they were strictly hiring based on skin colour, then there is definitely a problem......... It's most likely just a coincidence because its not like one person does all the hiring, and it can't be some sort of conspiracy to keep the non-white man down.

It's still racisim and it will never go away...sad but true....whats even more sad is that there are ppl out there that think hiring a minority over a majority b/c of there skin color and not there ability. PPL like that deserve to be punched in the face until they understand what there doing is not making anything better.
