Video-Game Giant EA Recalls Software
Electronic Arts Recalls Copies of Video Game
2/16/2005
Video game manufacturer Electronic Arts has recalled over a million copies of its best-selling game "NHL 2005", following reports that the 2004-2005 NHL season has been cancelled. This recall covers all variations of the game, from console and CD-based gaming systems, to PC versions.
"It's imperative that we bring in those copies of the game, for Quality Assurance reasons," said Doug Blythe, a media representative for the software giant.
Electronic Arts has said they are bringing the games in 'mainly' for packaging reasons. However, there is also a major glitch in the software. "With the cancellation of the 2005 season, the game now has a glitch that allows a season to be played for the 2004-2005 year. This is the primary reason for the recall, and it is a big enough issue that a patch cannot just be released online. It affects the entire game structure," Doug continues. "Users are currently able to play seasons in the game. Electronic Arts has always been about realism in its sports titles, and being able to play a season in the NHL just isn't realistic, so it has to be taken out of the game."
In its place, Electronic Arts is expected to add a new feature to the game called "Arbitration mode", where the user can enter numbers for the players association to scrutinize. "A very real aspect of Arbitration mode is that you'll have to try about 50 times before any of your offers are even considered. And even then, only half of them will be looked at seriously. No matter what numbers you enter."
The game is also expected to have a bonus feature called "Darts", where players can throw darts at pictures of league commissioner Gary Bettman and NHLPA boss Bob Goodenow.
Electronic Arts has not released any statements on its website as of yet, but is expected to in the coming days.-jp
