Vehicle Registration Tax Kicks In For T.O. Drivers On Monday
CityNews: Vehicle Registration Tax Kicks In For T.O. Drivers On Monday
Do you know what Monday is?
Oh sure, it's the first of September, it's Labour Day and it's the last long holiday weekend of the summer before work, school and maybe an election all intrude.
But there's no holiday from the tax man and if you live in Toronto, he's about to grab an extra $60 from your wallet. The beginning of the new month means Toronto's much hated Vehicle Registration Tax is about to kick in for good.
In you live in the city, the next time you go to get your sticker renewed for another year, it will cost you the extra levy. It will set you back $60 for a car and $30 for a motorcycle or moped.
The charge was part of the changes pushed through by Mayor David Miller last year, as the cash strapped city went looking for extra money.
While the car licence cost is a bit of a pain for most drivers, it's nothing compared to the other heavy levy city councillors pushed through. The Land Transfer Tax is already in place, and siphons thousands of dollars off the sale of a new home in the city, leaving many looking elsewhere in the GTA for a place to live.
The new taxes are expected to bring in some $200 million, but that still may not be enough to satisfy the always cash hungry city, which has to contend with higher costs for infrastructure repair, police and other union salaries, downloading, and increased expenses for the TTC.
