Urgent: Lockdown At Sheridan College!

This is from the girl writing some of our articles...
So I am at school right now, under a desk in the middle of a lockdown, this is what happened so far...we don't know anything else at the moment!

The suspect has a gun.

Feb 08, 2008
Moments ago an arrest was made at Sheridan College, though the lockdown is still in place while Halton Police officers sweep the building.

The lockdown was announced just before 2:30pm today when police were notified of a man carrying a gun inside the library of the school.

Within minutes they were on scene and students and professors were locked down inside classrooms.

Oakville Today will continue to report as more becomes available.

CityNews: Tense Lockdown At Sheridan College Ends After Reports Of Gunman On Campus

A major emergency has come to a calm end at one of the city's biggest college campuses, after a three hour-plus lockdown and scare over a man with a gun. As it turns out, police didn't find anything.

But what happened in the interval put everyone on edge.

It was Friday afternoon, a time when most people are looking forward to their weekend. The staff and students at Sheridan College's Trafalgar campus weren't any different. And then came 2:16pm, when a staff member thought he saw something he couldn't believe - a man who may have been carrying a long gun entering one of the buildings.

He immediately called security, who contacted police, and all thoughts of the weekend vanished as the entire complex was put into lockdown. The word quickly over loudspeakers and on the college's website that this wasn't a drill.

"Please be advised that Sheridan's TRAFALGAR campus is currently in an emergency lockdown situation," a message splashed on the front page read. "Emergency services personnel have been contacted. The situation is under investigation. Normal operations are suspended, do not proceed to the campus."

Halton Regional Police officers fanned out across the campus and began going classroom-to-classroom, hunting for anyone who might have been armed.

Anxious parents rushed to the area, waiting for word about their suddenly captive kids. Many were able to stay in touch thanks to modern technology and some ingenuity.

"She phoned me about an hour ago and said that they're on lockdown and I scooted down here and now her phone's almost dead," one mother related about her trapped daughter. "So she's texting me back and forth but moments ago they told them to close the windows and blinds and get under the tables. They're not telling them much. All they're saying is they're on lockdown and they're not telling them what's going on."

The mood inside began to deteriorate quickly as little information was released and the minutes changed into hours. "She's texting me constantly: 'What's going on? What's going on?' So there are some kids that have had some panic attacks in there right now so she's starting to freak out." Many were using the Internet as their only information lifeline.

No injuries were reported and in the end, police determined there likely wasn't a gunman. A 20-year-old male was reportedly questioned during the search, but it's not known why.

"We have systematically cleared the school and we are comfortable that it is secure and we are allowing the students and teachers back in," explains Halton Police Sgt. Brian Carr.

Police still intend to review security video to determine if there was anything to the original report.

But after a string of recent college shootings - including one on Friday in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, authorities are on high alert for copycats with a grudge.

Reports from the scene indicate a nearby Montessori school was also placed in lockdown as a precaution. But the all-clear has now been sounded in both locations.

So what exactly caused the apparent optical illusion that led to the commotion in the first place? Cops are now leaning towards the theory that the teacher spotted a student carrying a tripod and mistook it for a weapon.

Sheridan College is home to about 9,000 students and just under 1,300 staff members.

The ironic part is I was there while this was happening. I attend Sheridan College and I had to sit under my desk from 2:30 P.M. until just before 5 P.M.

I didn't panic at all, as I'm quite a relaxed person no matter the situation, but it was an experience nonetheless.

Police Confirm Sheridan College Gun Scare Was A Surprised Student Carrying A Tripod

You may remember last Friday when students and staff at Sheridan College's Trafalgar campus were forced into a three hour-plus lockdown after a professor and some students saw a man apparently walk into a building armed with a long gun.

After almost a week of probing the incident, Halton Regional Police have confirmed what they thought all along - it was simply a student carrying a microphone tripod. Cops say they reviewed security video of the scene and it clearly showed a young man walking down the hall with the object, which had been properly signed out from the Media Arts program.

Ironically, the bearer likely got caught in the lockdown he inadvertently started and must have wondered about the possibility of a gunman roaming the halls.

Investigators have since interviewed him and he assured them he knew nothing of the havoc he accidentally caused and that he never used the device in a threatening manner or tried to fool anyone into thinking he was armed.

In the end, the nerve racking event was all a misunderstanding, exacerbated by recent shooting incidents on school campuses in the U.S.

While authorities admit the entire scenario wasn't pleasant, they also add it was an excellent test. All the procedures put into place for such an emergency worked perfectly and everyone did exactly what they were supposed to.

Isn't that funny? They tell us it's a gun at first and then we find out it's a tripod. How very lame.
So many people freaked out. I pretty well sat there and laid down on the floor with my eyes closed ready for a nap.
