Couple dead after alleged street racing incident
CTV.ca News Staff
A Richmond Hill husband and wife on their way home from celebrating their 17th wedding anniversary are the innocent victims of a street race between two young men, police say.
Two red Honda cars were travelling north on Yonge Street at about 9:50 p.m. Saturday when one of the cars struck the couple's southbound vehicle near Stouffville Road in Richmond Hill, York Region police say.
Robbie Manchester, 47, and his wife Lisa, 43, were pronounced dead at the scene, just blocks from their home.
The couple leave behind a seven-year-old daughter, who was being watched by a family friend at the time of the accident.
"She's going to be totally devastated," said Pierre Frenette, whose daughter was babysitting the young girl.
"She is one of those kids that is devastated about a cat she lost five years ago."
Marco Gasparro, 19, of Richmond Hill, is charged with two counts of dangerous driving causing death.
The 21-year-old driver of the other car is in critical condition in Sunnybrook Hospital. Charges are pending against him.
Police say the two racing vehicles were travelling 150 km/h in the 80 km/h zone.
Earlier this year, Toronto cab driver Tahir Khan was killed after two teens were allegedly street racing along Mount Pleasant Avenue, reaching speeds of up to 140 km/h in the 50 km/h zone.
Khan was days away from becoming a Canadian citizen after leaving his wife and home in Pakistan six years ago to build a new life in Toronto.
One of the cars involved in the crash
has 'REDROCIT' licence plates.
Little remained of one of the cars involved in the crash.
Paramedics on scene load a stretcher into a waiting ambulance.
Rob and Lisa Manchester were killed when their car was hit by one of the speeding Hondas.

No body cares that the dude made a left turn... and got hit by the oncoming traffic... Yes street-racing bane of thew world, the cause of all our problems. But every time it seems someone gets killed by streetracing they made a bonehead move. The cabie pulling out of the stopsign back in the day on mount pleasent, now this. A LEFT ****ING TURN!!! How about you ****ing check to see if theres 2 civics flying at you, how about that?! Sure this is all very tragic, but the way they6 label everything streetracing and plan to impose harsher measures etc etc etc is ridiculous. I just know that one day ill be going 90 in 60 one late night, some dude beside my who just happens to be going around the same speed will hit something, and ill get hauled off cause I was 'racing' with him. What a crock!

This brings back to the very early stages of the streetracing scene...
Remember when we used to hit up some empty industrial roads and do some runs? I remember the time when we would all meet up at one place, chill for a bit, and then head over to a good location WITHOUT racing anyone during the trip there (it's too crowded usually).
During that time, I remember I used to cruise across a few popular roads (Steeles Ave, etc...) and there were no souped up cars anywhere! Even when I see another souped up car, they are actually heading over to the race location. It actually kept a lot of the racing off public roads. Everyone was at this ONE place, or going to this ONE place, and everyone was grouped.
All of a sudden, the media busts our a$$ and says what we are doing is illegal. It is in fact illegal, but back in '99, there were actually no deaths that were worth noting about (nothing recent back in '99). So the cops begin to scatter us and bust us at every spot.
What did this do? It made all the cars out and no longer centralized at one spot. So what happens? We could actually encounter many souped up cars just by driving around. Without a place to race, the public streets with traffic becomes the place to do the runs.
So all these deaths is actually caused by a stupid move from the media and the police. Instead of channelling the "groups of cars" to a better place to do their runs, they them out so almost every block there are people racing. Of course people would die and of course accidents happen in that fashion. Duh...
One way to solve this is to do a local drag night, either blocking off a few streets, or an airport/drag strip. It should open every weekend and a place for everyone to gather without any heat from the cops and without any stupid tickets. This would make every kid feel great about gathering at the "new hot spot" and do runs in a controlled environment. Same street talk and smack talking, same street stuff going on ,but without the innocent lives involved. We've seen the US do that and it works, and it doesn't even cost that much to operate.
You know it gets quite stupid when even myself, I am afraid to go to a big track day. The last time my buddy was at Cayuga, there were cops impounding people's cars... WTF Basically I am back on the streets for the time being, but I don't really race but rather chill and maybe do a few pulls by myself on the way back home.

All i have to say is if you can't pull on a car in 3rd GIVE UP!!! its over!! 90% of our cars pull hardest in 3dr gear. so if your not pulling or passing him in 3rd gear, or he's not pulling on you its over. THE END.

I AGREE with Tony the Tiger, I remember those days as well.
It was a huge hangout, everyone behaved themselves in the parking lots and everyone felt welcome. The last thing anybody wanted to do was to do something stupid on the public streets to attract the popo's.
Then everyone would meet at a barren location, cars would be sent to both the start and finish to insure the road was both clear of any 'wondering' cars or from popo's and the race would happen. Possibly 2 or 3.
After this was completed everyone would gather again at the meeting spot and shoot the .
Now that this is all gone, people drive up and down the public streets looking to get their 'fix' in.
Obviously there is a huge problem with that, and the solution isn't to increase penalties. The penalties right now should be enough to deter public racers. But it happens anyways. Just goes to show that by increasing the penalties further won't help. Just cost our tax dollars more by passing these lengthy bills and more then likely inconvenience us who do not race on the streets and just like owning a nice car.
My thoughts are with the little girl who doesn't have her parents, she was the last person who deserved to be a victim of all this.

What's with all this street racing news now? It seems like the media has found their new target.

But it sells papers and gives politicians a reason to exist i guess.
