CityNews: Treat Gang Members Like Terrorists, Councillor Urges
Sad attempt to solve a problem in the city, how do they know what a gang member looks like. this will just end up with the media making stupid headlines like "Apparent Gang Member arrested" when someone of color gets arrested for a something small
It's a controversial idea that some think is over the top but others believe is sorely needed.
Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti has a plan that he feels will make Toronto's streets safe: treat gang members like terrorists.
He made his comments on CityOnline Friday, the same day that two innocent men were murdered inside an SUV.
And they weren't the only blameless victims - Toronto's tally is sadly high for 2008.
Mammoliti proposed that stricter regulations will keep gang members off the streets and communities safe.
"Well, I think, if you talk to anyone in the communities that are being terrorized by our own gang members here in the city of Toronto, they will tell you that they're afraid, that they're threatened, that they have to keep their mouth shut, and they'd better not say anything to the police officers if something should go down," he said on the program.
He's already proposed curfews as a stop-gap solution.
"I think anyone that goes into a community and keeps it hostage by threatening, by killing, by assaulting and literally gets to individuals that [then] stop talking and are afraid to come out of their homes, I think that's a good definition of terrorism," he added.
Mammoliti agrees with Mayor David Miller idea for a hand gun ban. The Mayor will be making an announcement Friday, the subject of which isn't known.
"I agree with the approach that the city of Toronto wants to take with respect to not. wanting to be known as a city with guns."
In other interviews, he pointed to the increased prevalence ofgangs like the MS-13 as the reason for the increased police power.

Maybe they should blame street racing for the gang problem..What a dork..Its a person's choice weather or not they say anything. If they are so scared, why not go into witness protection?

If everyone who witnessed a serious crime spoke out - it would be the gang members who would be afraid to commit serious crimes. Think about it, 30 ppl see you do something, now they have power over you. But in reality, these ppl are afraid, and I can fully understand why. I would be to if I knew a whole gang would come after me for talking. Maybe they all should organize themselvs and act as auxillary police, now every community would have several hundred aux police and only a few gangs, the community would then have numbers on their side as well as authority and the law. If that were the situation and I was a gang member - Ib be afraid or very carefull when I do something knowing that dozens of ppl could run out of their houses and arrest me and be witnesses against me.
ya well - wont happen, not now anyways, maybe back in the 50's

Gang violence is idiotic. Gangs have the mentality that they can't be touched. The truth is that they ARE terrorists. They put fear in everyone's heart. Because they can, and have committed random acts of violence and have gotten away with it. The truth is that they are powerless to an empowered community.
When I'm in Canada, I live in a rural community. I know quite a few of the people in my town. I know that most own guns. I know that most HAVE shot things (ie. Hunting). I am NOT afraid to live where I do. I can walk freely anywhere I want. And to be honest, if there are gang memebers in my town, they must be afraid, because there is no gang activity where I live.
People (ie. General population) need to know that they hold the power, not gangs. Once that gets out gangs are history.
But what do I know...

We live in an Anarchy each area run by gangs some areas worse then others. I wish Canada had a second amendment it's just to easy for criminals to get by with crimes. David Miller is a complete idiot, he's a reactive leader he reacts to a problem instead of being proactive. It seems to be very common in Canadian politics where they wait till everything has gone down the whole before trying to do anything. They need to stop worrying about hand gun bans, enforcing the current gun laws is good enough. Look at American cities with gun bans they have the highest crime rates then look at American cities that allow guns, they end up having the lowest crime rates. Examples could be Chicago banned guns and has one of the highest crime rates, Austin Texas strong supporters of second amandment and have very low crime rate.
Also so many low life thugs in my area and my area is considered a nice place to live, one kid that strikes fear into everyone mace's people in the park for fun at night. He randomly attacked one of his friends and two of this other hood rats mugged me and sucker punched me about a year and a half ago. Friends of friends have actually went home to get a gun and went back to the park and this guy wasn't there.
The problem is the criminals have no problem carrying a gun or a knife and there is absolutely nothing that the victim can do there is no law protecting victims of self defense. If a guy points a gun at you, you can fight back but you might end up getting charged yourself. Victims are absolutely powerless, unless the police force lets normal upstanding citizens arm themselves for self protection the only people ever able to stop criminals is the police and there just aren't enough of them and the police that are there are completely corrupt or not around ever to do anything.
