Toronto officers will soon have one more weapon to help them battle crime in the city.

The Police Services Board approved spending a million dollars to buy more than 400 tasers on Thursday night.

The head of the Toronto Police Association says carrying tasers will be good for both cops and criminals.

"What tasers can do is allow you to use a less lethal force, and in fact it will save lives and also not create dangerous situations for officers," said Pres. Dave Wilson

For now use of high voltage weapons will be reserved to frontline supervisors.

"I think Toronto police officers should carry tasers," remarked one Torontonian. "Probably an effective way of keeping the streets safe for people without harming innocent bystanders

The problem is that the bad guys still have guns and the cops aren't going to use a taser when they've got a gun pointed at them. So is it really going to be any safer?
