CityNews: Some Call For Fantino's Resignation After Controversial Remarks Made Public
Some are demanding that Julian Fantino step down from his post as Ontario's top cop after threatening remarks he made to a well-known First Nations protester became public recently.
The OPP commissioner personally intervened in negotiations to end last summer's Aboriginal Day of Action, a demonstration in which protesters staged blockades along an eastern stretch of Highway 401 and a CN Rail line near Deseronto, Ont. to voice concern and anger over the standard of living on the province's reserves and unresolved land claims.
Fantino's controversial remarks were made to First Nations protest leader Shawn Brant while he was trying to an end last June's blockades.
Brant is facing nine charges in connection to the demonstrations and a publication ban on evidence given at his preliminary hearing was lifted last week, allowing the OPP commissioner's comments to be made public.
In transcripts of a recorded phone call Fantino tells Brant that he will do "everything I can within your community and everywhere else to destroy your reputation" and that his world would "come crashing down" if the standoff with police doesn't come to an end.
"We don't expect, in Canadian society, to put our lives on the line or to be targeted as the evidence says by Mr. Fantino," Brant said Tuesday. "We don't expect that that should be a life-and-death situation."
Court documents also allege the OPP planned to have snipers on standby and disguised officers as media cameraman to survey the protest sites.
Fantino formally responded to the publication of the transcripts Monday.
"I am disappointed that this matter is being portrayed by some in the media and the political arena as something other than the successful negotiation and peaceful resolution of an intense and possibly volatile situation," he said in a statement. "I am confident that the judicial process will determine the outcome of these criminal proceedings in a fair, impartial and unbiased manner."
The OPP commissioner said the provincial force follows conduct guidelines as laid out in recommendations from the Ipperwash Inquiry into the death of native protester Dudley George.
NDP MPP and justice critic Peter Kormos called Fantino's comments "bellicose" and "inflammatory" and accused the OPP boss of encouraging tension between police and the aboriginal community instead of quelling it.
"I think it's time for him to go," Kormos said. "He should either resign or be fired."
Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty stood behind Fantino.
"I'm not going to speak to a matter that's before the courts; what I can say is that Commissioner Fantino continues to have my full confidence," he said. "He has worked long and hard under very trying circumstances for a very long time now and he has my support."
Brant insists he doesn't plan to pursue a lawsuit but said an apology won't suffice.
"We're tired of the apologies . What we want is real change, fundamental change in the way that this government and the police deal with First Nations people," he said.

i say we get a brinks truck, wth a battering ram, and slam it into the protesting indians. that way we get roads back and traffic can go back to normal. thats just my opinion.
as for the comment, its a human thing to be pissed off. he was pissed and he told this *** jockey that hes not gonna win. he just chose his own words for it, but i dont think he really did anything wrong

Well I don't exactly agree with what the natives have been doing, but Fantino is on too much of a power trip and needs to be removed from his position of power.
He may not have been the one that proposed this new law that violates our charter of rights and has got a lot of us pissed off, but he did jump on it with a lot of his own ideas.
The reason he jumped on the new law (the way I see it) was to take the media focus off of his poor handling of the Caladonia situation.
He used to pull the same when he was chief of Toronto police. When ever the media was on him about not doing anything about gang violence and other problems, he went and had his troops do street racing stings and anything else that had to do with trafic. Hold press conferences on the subject just to take the medias attention away from the real problems.
He is nothing more than a politician with a badge and needs to be fired before he manages to take away more of our rights and freedoms.
If this new issue is what it takes to get rid of him, I fully support it.

It's clear that auto enthusiasts can't trust the police to begin with. As for Native Indians, we know they cant trust any Government officials or Police.
If they can him, he will be replaced by a new puppet.

as for blocking the highways , that really sux, especially , since the natives were an inferior civilization, that got colonized because their society was way to weak . what ... should we all start complaining now ? all of the many nations of europe that are now part of bigger countries, should we all start bocking the highways because we were colonised, because others were stronger and more advanced than us? wouldn't think so ...
because of the european civilizations that colonized america, the natives do not have to fear wolves and bears anymore. they can get free dental care as oposed to taking their teeth out with a rock when they hurt . they can shower , eat with cutlery , eat sanitary food , live a lot longer lives probably
so why block our highways ... that's rude , don't bite the hand that feeds you.

a funny question to ask these native activists would be if they use toilet paper or if they crap in the woods and then walk with their middle finger apart from their body until they find a river.
because if they use toilet paper ... they should be issuing official thanks not protests :P

Fantino just defers the attention away from the continuing rise of violent crime. He stands there at those conferences telling the world cars and people driving them fast are criminals. He's turned a blind eye to violent crime far to long. I'm much more worried about getting mugged and beat up maybe even killed if he pulls a gun on the way to the corner store at 1 in the morning then a dude flying in the left lane on the 401 doing 150km/h.
