Shots Ring Out Near Home Of Slain Teen
City News - Original Link - With Video
Lorraine Small has been through so much in the past week, that's it's amazing she can still continue to function. But the mother of 15-year-old Jordan Manners is not only grief stricken, she's feeling another emotion in the midst of her loss - blazing anger.
It came after several people gathered outside her Shoreham Drive home early Friday morning and fired at least 30 shots in the air from different guns. Police have called it a drastically inappropriate 'tribute' to the high school student who was gunned down at C.W. Jefferys C.I. a week ago Wednesday. The disturbing gesture came just one day after Small laid her son to rest at a funeral attended by more than a thousand people.
"It's disrespectful. It's disrespectful you know," she complains, her voice a mixture of sadness and resignation. "My son was sent off yesterday. For them or the media or whomever said it was a salute to him? No. It's just like - you know, you're killing me."
But while authorities may call it a misguided tribute, family lawyer Courtney Betty is convinced there was another message emanating from the sounds of that gunfire - stop calling for an end to guns in the Jane-Finch neighbourhood and quit calling for a crackdown on gangs. "Their feeling is that it was a form of intimidation and a message that was sent by certain individuals. That's the family's view, and they're fearful and now taking steps at least in the short term to address those concerns."
Neighbours are equally outraged. "Jordan was not a gangbanger and he wasn't a gunman for him to get a gun salute," one area resident insists.
Police arrested a suspect and recovered a loaded .9 millimetre handgun not long after the bullets were fired. He now faces weapons charges, but to the dismay of those inside Manners' home, cops admit they're not even sure if he was one of those who fired a weapon outside their home overnight.
Two young offenders, described as being friends of the victim, are charged in the murder. Both are expected back in court on Monday via a video link.
