Scarborough Tries To Clear Its "Crime" Rep
What's the first thing you think of when you hear the words "North York"?
How about "Etobicoke?"
Now what comes to mind if someone says "Scarborough"?
Chances are you responded the way many people on the streets of Toronto did Wednesday.
"Crime," answered one.
"Crime" echoed another.
"Ghetto" replied a third.
All of which is typical. And most of which is wrong.
It turns out the per capita crime rate east of Victoria Park is actually less than the same measurement west of that boundary in the rest of Toronto.
But you'd never know it by the former city's reputation. Why has Scarborough become such a scarred borough?
"I think it is the media," suggests resident Donna Sharp. "I think that everyone uses the word Scarborough, and they come in and they just right away think that everybody is bad."
It's that kind of perception that Scarborough Councillor Norm Kelly is out to stop. He's infuriated by the unreasonable rep. "When you identify yourself as somebody from Scarborough, people feel sorry for you," he relates. "You know, they pity you."
But he maintains there's good reason to believe that's inappropriate. "It's a third of the land mass of the city. It's a quarter of the population," he points out. "It has million-dollar homes in it. It's got leafy treed neighbourhoods with winding roads, a lot of beautiful communities."
Kelly believes the problem lies with the media, which regularly talks about a crime happening in Scarborough. But when something similar occurs elsewhere, they give a location instead of saying just "North York."
"No one likes to be thought of in a way that is contrary to the reality of who we are," he proclaims.
He's launching a campaign to get reporters to refer to any future crime scene by a specific intersection - and not by a well worn brush that tars an entire group of people.

It's in the people
Well a good start would be for residents (young punks ) to stop calling the city Scarlem and other bull$#&# names like that and yes there's nice hoods in Scarborough but there are bad ones as well and people just have that imprinted in their mind. They should really press immigrants to be better citizens (I am a first gen immigrant so don't gimme some b.s. comment) because if you notice it's quite often them who are in the media. They should also have more community events in some of the negatively portrayed areas and have the media there in full attendance to broadcast. Media..man...CP24 is getting way to Americanized in my opinion...remember...while you're sleeping, what you don't know about your bed sheets could kill you..if you're

Scarborough Isn't sh*t.
Allan, your a .
The only real hard areas in Scarborough are Orton Park , Guilder (occasionally) , Tuxeto Court and a small area around Markham and Eglington.
I've lived in two of those areas and never got jumped or bothered .
I walked to the 24 hr convenience stores Drunk off my *** in the middle of the night and nobody bothered me.
Scarbrough is for the most part a bunch of Thug Dressed highschool kids trying to intimadate people.

walk around anywhere at night its potential danger. kinda foolish to walk around late at night by yourself, your almost asking for trouble, even if you mind your own business. ive never been stopped by anyone for anything more then the time or directions late at night, ill consider myself lucky. obviously theres less danger in certain areas but.... i just think when something happens in scarb the media does make a big fuss about it, yet when something happens elsewhere is quickly said with little attention. what pisses me off is some of the ppl causing problems are living in government housing, WTF is that?? they should be so glad they have a roof over their head for next to nothing, and whats even worse is ppl scam hit to live in those places, but they are the first to bitch about how the community doesnt do anything for them. i dont live in this country to sit around a hope someone does something for me... thats what really bugs me about scarborough, ppl bitch cuz they dont have it made.... get off your *** and do something about it. now there is the few that do work hard, ill give them that, but its those that do nothing that ruin it for everyone...
and yea ill agree with the thugged out highschool kids,i grew up with a fair population of them, they complain they dont have cars, but they dont have jobs and look at me like is handed to me... i mean you dress like a thug and that makes you a gangsta?? you chop weed oh no? anyone that has grown up in a hard childhood never talks about it, its those that talk about it that you know they had it easy. this is ****ing canada, its alot worse elsewhere.

Sit down and listen to the scanner.. Scarborough alone has more traffic and calls then the Total of York and Halton added together..
Albeit.. half of it is for cops pullin someone for watever reason.. ( Damm those street racers )
I"ve heard calls to Tuxedo & Markham area.. and was there on scene.. saw 4 cruisers drive by and no one wants to take the call.. 2 cruisers with wat looks like noobies showed up 20min. later
THe cops like Kingston rd. also.
Oh.. for those that made that East end meet last summer.. humm.. bunch of folks hangin out in front of timmmies.. some dood walks up.. state he just got out of jail.. wants us to buy his weed.. and is even willing to give us free sample.. Only in Scar..

And another thing about the thugged out punks. They run around talking as though they're from down south USA "yaaaA I mean" (you know what I mean) and then they have these thug outfits and then they take those same outfits
to F***in job interview after job interview and bitch that no one is hiring them and they wanna get vexed. Wake up and smell the society. Someone with a fur-lined parka, jeans with more advertising that a street car and "P" "H" phat shoes will not likely get hired for any reputable company. These kids fail to realize that there is a time and place for everything. I listen to gangsta rap, reggae, and hip hop but you won't see me driving into work with my car system making me deaf. Scarborough needs to improve their schools and lay down solid rules that say if you don't do _____ then you are not welcome at this school because this is a respected school.

Scarboro
weston
rexdale
all holes with the occastional nice established 50-60s neighborhood
This is the future of toronto give or take 30 years from now , our close cousin!:
There are satelite photos taken in various parts of detroit from the early 70s till now lote of which shows nature reclaiming the city from years of decay and abandonment.

well cry me a river... i live in the Jane and Finch area and guess what comes to mind when i tell people that.
even if you refer to the area as the intersections instead of the district, in the end it's still Scarborough. All you're doing now is just targeting specific neighbourhoods in Scarborough which isn't gonna do any more good for it anyways.

Scarborough isnt that bad of a area. If you dont bother anyone for the most part noone will bother you. Areas like rex and jnf have less crime on a whole but its in a smaller area. Scarborough is has its getto's but generally it aint that bad.
Exactly what I'm saying hear no evil see no evil.
It is true the most of the thug dressed highskool kids try to intimadate ppl. But thoes are not the people you should be worrying about.
