Racers Riot in Austrailia
So get this - today I was looking up some track stuff and looking at Aussie hot rods and I stumbled upon this (Im a lil sketchy on the details so don't quote me, but) ---> looks like back in January of 2007 in a lil area of Australia in a place called Noble Park there might be some sort of a race track (1/4 mile). They have races there only a few times a year and people get kicked out cuz their cars dont meet tech inspection (requiring roll bars n such excessive safety equip even for slow factory stock vehicles - which seems to also be illegal to have installed in cars for public road use as I've heard ppl on Aussie forums complaining that they get ticketed for having roll bars in their cars while driving on public roads - basically if you race on the track it's to be a track only vehicle) and most ppl there can hardly afford their daily drivers let alone a seperate race car.
They have been asking the authorities/ powers that be - to hold more race nights but to no avail as the track is used a measly 5 times a year (what a waste). A couple of ppl took it upon themselves to go to use this track instead of the streets (I'm guessing they tresspassed when the track was closed), were arrested for illegal racing on a legal race track and had their rides impounded (cops there can seize cars for as long as they want). This is what I love about non-Ontario people - some auto enthusiasts got together to support each other and to work together to try to reslove the issue as well as to operate the track more often. They were told to fukk off and that's when all hell broke loose. Well some "HOONS" (Aussie speack for hoodlums Im guessing - not to be compared to the "good decent non street racing auto enthusiasts") rallied together and asked for the cars back. Cops said NO. One thousand of em gathered together and tried to get the cars back, didn't happen so some of them insited a riot (hence the HOON term), they vandilized and looted shops, tore the town to pieces, wreaked all sorts of havoc trying to make their point that they are really serious about this -u-ation. Apparently only a few ppl have actually been arrested or ever will be arrested.
I simply don't understand this *****. The town has a legal race track but only operates it 5 times annually and only on weekdays [however I may be confusing this specific track with another track in Melbourne as Im trying to piece together what happened and where, from various different sources]
That is a total waste - the town could actually make some money by operating it and ppl would race there instead of the streets - but NO. Car enthusiasts get together to try to put together a sucessfull business plan on behalf of the town in order to have the track open more often but are told to shove off, so they leave. The sketchy types have always gatherd together and hold highly organized illegal street racing and hardly ever get caught.
A couple ppl break ingto this facility to use the track (apparently there were less than 6 ppl attending this) and get caught cuz ppl passing by heard the cars. The ***** disturbers then use this incident to take the matter into their own hands. This seems to be a push point for street racers. The street racers highly outnumber the authorities, but I think Austrlia has some seriously harsh arcaic/primitive/barbaric (for lack of a better word) laws somewhat akin to Mexico, so its seems to be a stand off of sorts cuz the cops there wont hesitate to shoot yer A$$.
I totally dissagree with them rioting and causing all sorts of ***** (looks bad on the law abiding auto enthusiasts), but I commend ppl for organizing together to find a peacefull and viable solution - too bad it didnt work.
I'll try and keep looking into this to see what ends up happening over there - I'm trying to get in contact with some ppl who live in the area to get more details and updates and any new developments in this story.
