Sportsnet.ca -- The Toronto Raptors could have had Jamaal Magloire.
The Toronto Star is reporting the Raptors were on the verge of trading disgruntled superstar Vince Carter to New Orleans for Magloire earlier this season. The Hornets pulled out of the deal when Raptors general manager Rob Babcock tried to enlarge the trade to satisfy financial concerns.
Magloire, who's from Toronto and would love to play for his hometown team, is returning to the lineup after missing nearly three months with a broken ring finger on his right hand. He would have been an upgrade over struggling rookie Rafael Araujo.
Only half of Magloire's $8.53-million (all figures U.S.) would have counted in the trade, but a league source said the Hornets were willing to throw in a few expiring contracts to match Carter's salary of close to $12-million.
Babcock instead traded Carter to the New Jersey Nets for bench warmers Eric Williams and Aaron Williams, two future first-round picks and Alonzo Mourning. Mourning was recently bought out for nearly $10-million.
The Star is also reporting the Raptors were on the verge of another trade on draft-day that would have seen them send the No. 8 overall pick (used to draft Araujo) for guard Antonio Daniels and the No. 12 pick from Seattle.
So let's see. We could've had Magloire and gotten rid of that stiff of a Centre Araujo that should've been drafted at 18, not 8. What a dumb .
