Police Arrest Biker Gang Members In Street Crime Crackdown
Thursday September 28, 2006
They came from all over the province in the dark of night, creeping up slowly on their prey.
Without warning, they burst in, guns cocked and ready, handcuffs gleaming in the flashlight -lit interior, taking suspects into custody without a shot being fired.
That scenario was repeated over and over again early Thursday, as 500 officers from 11 different divisions and forces across Ontario took part in "Project Tandem", an operation targeting some biker gangs.
Most of those arrested belong to the Hell's Angels, although some are associates of the offshoot Vagabonds.
The raids were carried out in Oshawa, Windsor and across the G.T.A., including a fitness club across from Sherway Gardens.
Many early work-out buffs were caught emerging naked from a shower when the armed squad burst in.
"We're targeting primarily Hell's Angels illegal motorcycle gang members and associate members," outlines O.P.P. Sgt. Bob Paterson. "Now it's not exclusive Hell's Angels. There are other clubs involved, but that was the thrust of our efforts."
Police are being quiet about what they were looking for, who they arrested and what they're charged with, but it's clear they believe the dozens of people in custody are responsible for a large number of illegal activities.
"It's certainly safe to say that it's a major interruption," admits Paterson.
Highway 12 was completely shut down through Uxbridge at about 5am as several suspects were taken into custody by Durham Regional Police. They were taken to the division in Oshawa for questioning.
Toronto, York and Peel cops were also involved.
Many of those collared were taken to 42 Division on Milner Ave., where security has been tightened.
The raids are the result of an 18-month investigation and some careful planning.
Members of the Hell's Angels who didn't get caught up in the dragnet weren't anxious to talk about the operation, either.
"No comment," shouted one through the door of a clubhouse on Eastern Ave. "Get off the property!"
Sources tell CityNews this bust could have a major impact on the alleged drug activities carried out by bike gangs. It happened during the annual marijuana harvest, the most profitable time of the year.
Charges include trafficking in weapons and counsel to commit murder. Several properties as well as drugs and weapons were seized.
Police promise to reveal more in a press conference on Friday.
