Exclamation New Tools Help Cops Nab Drunk And Dangerous Drivers

Video

Despite repeated warnings and countless tragic accidents, there are those who still choose to get behind the wheel after having too much to drink or who put fellow motorists in danger by speeding and making unsafe maneuvers.

But this long weekend, police have new tools to process alleged offenders and respond to any serious crashes.

The OPP unveiled its new mobile command centre Friday, which is equipped with all the devices officers need to efficiently investigate offences and support safety initiatives, including intoxilyzer and alcotest machines, a phone booth with an ambient noise filter so an accused can speak with a lawyer in privacy, audio and visual recording equipment and internet access.

The provincial force has also setup a new 12-member Regional Directed Patrol team that will focus on RIDE spot checks, drugs and weapons enforcement, stolen vehicles and aggressive drivers.

"These officers will be working throughout the GTA focusing on the big three: impaired driving, aggressive driving and seat belts. I'll also be looking at the high volume traffic spots, looking beyond the license plate and dealing with the criminal element that unfortunately use our highways as well," OPP Sgt. Cam Woolley explained.

With thousands leaving the city to head to cottage country and thousands more flooding into Toronto for Caribana, the OPP will have two planes in the air all weekend monitoring the roads.

Of course there's strength in numbers, which has necessitated more boys and girls in blue and black on and off the highways, looking for any and every infraction, right down to those who fail to validate their license.

And with the rash of recent drownings, police will also be keeping a close watch on waterways, which have become more dangerous over the past several weeks due to heavy rainfall.

"It's been a deadly summer on the ATV trails and on the waterways and all this record rainfall has made water levels rise," Woolley added, "hiding some of the rocks and also the rivers and streams are moving fast. There's currents there, so it's deadly."
