Never going to the track again
I went twice last week. my best run was a 14.75 at 96 mph and an RT of .046. LACR sucks, the whole 60 foot i had no traction.
during a few burnouts, however, i bouced off the rev limiter a few times and one of my passes i shifted from 3rd to 4th too fast and hit the middle of 2nd and 4th, so the shifter sorta jammed, and i slammed it down to get it into 4th, well instead it slammed into 2nd...once i let off the clutch and realized it was in 2nd, i immediately hit the clutch and put it back into 4th...
but the damage was done. it was fine til this past monday when i was driving home. i was just cruising to a stop at around 40 mph and i noticed some weird noise as i downshifted. the whole way home it was missin so bad, vibrating so bad and had no power. i took it into work the next day (btw, i now work as a full time mechanic ) and we went over it very extensively and my boss whos an ASE Master Tech said it must be the opti...
so after a $300 opti and about 2 hours of work i still had the same problem. we went over it even more thoroughly and found the exhaust valve spring retainer on cylinder #8 to be broken, and it was holding the valve lower than it should, which is better than being completely broken and dropping the entire valve.
i finally had time to get back to it and fixed it today, but im mad cuz 1. my boss took the valve covers off and watched it all as i cranked it, so he shoulda noticed the retainer and 2. he said it had to be the opti, well he should owe me $300.
the good news...i tore my whole engine apart minus the shortblock and reassembled it in 4 hours...the book says 16.7

donno if u saw the pics of my last 355 however FIX THOSE VALVE SPRINGS, exactly what happened to mine, wasnt pulling it back in the head and it got weaker n weaker and finally a piston slapped it and half hte valve went down and basically the motor was 1 big piece of scrap.

And thats when I prefer my auto.....much easier to drag race. It may be the easy way to do it, but I'll stick with my consistent times, thank you very much.
That sucks about your car man, the opti was probably gonna go out soon anyway.....seems to be a recurring LT1 problem.
LS1 owns joo.
