Sticks up for Brian and protects him from miss macdonald – bringing the 2 characters together..while brian is from a middle class family and the young ben isn’t.

Deals with Art who mistreated the gopher – makes brian aware of the sanctity of life..he admires young ben

Brian follows young ben when it comes to understanding the prairie

Brian refers to the prairie as young bens in chapter one
