In the end, Big Ben won over the City of Lights.
After four ballots, London was selected to host the 2012 Olympic Summer Games over the runner-up, Paris, in one of the most high-profile bid races in the games’ history.
The final decision by the International Olympic Committee came as a bit of a surprise – as Paris had been the favoured city going into Wednesday’s voting in Singapore.
"The International Olympic Committee has the honour of announcing that the Games of the 30th Olympiad in 2012 are awarded to the city of London," said IOC president Jacques Rogge.
The city went wild in reaction, waving Union Jack flags and unfurling a huge sign reading 'Thank you.'
The five finalists for the bid were all world-class cities: Moscow, Madrid, New York, Paris and London.
Moscow was the first to be eliminated, quickly followed by New York in the second round and Madrid third in the IOC’s secret ballot.
New York and Madrid were seen as outside chances, although the Spanish city made a strong surge. Moscow was considered a long shot. New York wasn’t really seen as a contender until the past few weeks, when Governor George Pataki and Senator Hillary Clinton made a strong push for the bid.
The 2012 Games follow the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver and Whistler, B.C.
Paris was bidding for the third time in 20 years after defeats for the 1992 and 2008 Olympics. The country’s presentation featured an eye-popping video by film director Luc Besson of The Fifth Element and La Femme Nikita. It began with a bird's eye view of the city, with a camera panning over famous landmarks.
London last held the Games in 1948. The victory follows failed bids for Birmingham for the 1992 Olympics and Manchester for 1996 and 2000.
Prime Minister Tony Blair spoke in a video message after making two days of appeals in Singapore.
"My promise to you is we will be your very best partners," Blair said. "The entire government are united behind this bid. ... It is the nation's bid."
London's film featured scenes of the Queen, famous tourist sites, hotels, and theatres.
