'Kenny vs Spenny' returns with 'South Park' creators at the helm
TORONTO - Fans of "Kenny vs Spenny" won't be surprised to hear about the duelling duo's lives off-camera: Kenny is dating a gorgeous model and has been hanging out with his "South Park" pals in Mexico while Spenny is in therapy twice a week to deal with the lingering trauma of shooting the show's new season.
Spenny confesses he's agitated even though he has good reason to celebrate - Matt Stone and Trey Parker, creators of "South Park," are the executive producers of the fourth season, and threw their might behind a recent deal to air 10 new episodes, along with 10 previous ones, on the U.S. powerhouse pay channel, Comedy Central.
Stone and Parker ran into Spencer Rice and Ken Hotz in the Los Angeles airport and soon became rabid fans of the show, which pits the longtime Canadian pals against one another in a different battle of wits every week.
The fourth season premiere, airing on Showcase on Tuesday night at 9:30 p.m. ET, is a classic: the first one to become visibly sexually aroused while wearing a Speedo loses the contest and will be subjected, as always, to a humiliation of the winner's choosing.
"Luckily I haven't been irreparably harmed," Spenny said in a recent interview, but he pointed out past episodes where Kenny's treatment of him crossed the line.
"When I was pushed off that cow - I could have broken my neck easily. And him slipping me acid . . . ," Spenny says.
"Now nothing (serious) has happened to me, so at the end of the day when my temper subsides and I look at the footage, I am enough of a team player to say: 'You know what? This is a pretty special, unique show that we have here and I am not going to call my lawyers.'
"But if and when, God forbid, it goes too far and I really get hurt or vice versa, he gets hurt, it's a different story."
Fans of "Kenny vs Spenny" are enthralled by the antagonistic dynamic of the show: Kenny is the wise-cracking schemer who frequently bends the rules or flat-out cheats in his battles with the serious, moralistic and easily annoyed Spenny, who plays by the book and consequently usually ends up losing the challenges.
Kenny scoffs at the notion he's the bad boy of the series, a cult favourite among the high school and university crowd despite the duo's advancing years - Kenny is 40 and Spenny is 37.
"I am like the bad boy but still really fun-loving, cool, not abusive," Kenny says.
"I'm kind of a fun-loving trickster. I am a devious genius. Spenny is the bad guy; Spenny's the one who's paranoid, neurotic, has anger fits, he's manic. I guess I'm the cheater but to me, our show doesn't really mean anything. It's OK that I cheat."
Stone and Parker have said what attracted them to the show wasn't just the outrageous humour to be found during contests like "Who Can Sell More Bibles?" and "Who Do Gay Guys Like More?"
"Truthfully, the show isn't just funny, it's the most accurate examination of male friendships that we've ever seen," they said in a statement when the Comedy Central deal was announced.
Indeed, Kenny and Spenny have known one another since childhood. Their fathers used to hang out as teenagers and tried to meet women at well-known Ontario tourist traps Wasaga Beach and Crystal Beach, Kenny says.
Their Toronto-based families are close, but Spenny says those bonds are strained at times due to Kenny's antics.
"It's the constant sexual jokes about my mother .... my mom's a little upset about the comments, because they're disgusting," says Spenny, who adds that doubles his usual therapy sessions while shooting the show.
"I have physically attacked him on a few occasions because we are talking about my mother - I sort of liken myself to the dog who gets poked a lot and lashes out."
The problem, Spenny says, is the major differences in their personalities. He describes his friend as a "scammer," alleging that Kenny frequently lies and schemes his way into getting bumped into first class whenever the pair travels, to name just one example.
"Look, we love each other on a certain level, but his approach to life and my approach to life are completely different. I think a lot of his instincts and the way he looks at the world are flat-out wrong and possibly ... I don't want to say immoral, because that's too strong. And I think, sadly, the culture tends to bend more towards his world view than mine."
Kenny, for his part, is too busy living the high life to bother with a similar psychoanalysis of his friend. He once consulted on a "South Park" episode and was flown down to a posh Mexican resort for a week to brainstorm with Parker, Stone and other "South Park" writers.
"It was this insanely expensive hotel, and I get to the hotel room and on the table is a huge bottle of champagne and a note from Comedy Central saying 'congratulations on your Emmy' because they'd won an Emmy the night before - so there I was, getting in on the Emmy action and I hadn't even unpacked," he says with a laugh.
His new girlfriend is a well-known Canadian model, Kenny claims, though he won't identify her.
"She's a supermodel, a huge Canadian model - a superhot, mega-hot Canadian model. I'm the best 10 seconds of her life."
