ip isn't a server, it's the address for the server, where is the data actually stored on YOUR computer or a web server?

I know the difference between a server and an IP address. I'm a network administrator FFS, if you don't stop talking to me like I'm an idiot, I'm going to hit you with a heavy, blunt object.

You said something about a Google-bot finding it. A Google-bot won't find jack-shyt if the server address is an IP, because there's no hotlink for the bot to follow to the IP, and Google doesn't just search random IP addresses. The server itself is hosted by me. It's my home theatre PC with an SSL-enabled FTP server set up on it.

Even if it was hosted on ftp.sweatyballsmcgee.com, if I do not provide any hotlink to ftp.sweatyballsmcgee.com, Google will NOT find it. It will list sweatyballsmcgee.com as a website, but it will not automatically say "Hey look, an FTP!" And considering access to view/download files from the FTP is restricted by IP (meaning only the IP assigned to my office workstation can access it) and username/password (password is a 26 digit alpha-numeric case sensitive password, like a WEP key), it would be very difficult to crack without someone seriously wanting access badly into that server. And if they go through all the trouble, just to download my MP3s, they deserve it.

If you've ever made a reference to it in such a way that it's tracable from a website (linked to an image residing within, used a hyperlink with the address in it), then Google will find it, yes.

Google will not find 65.11.24.33 or whatever IP I host the FTP on unless I publish it somewhere on the web, which I have not and will not.
