How did you learn?

How did you learn how to drive stick? Im going to buy a civic soon, and I was just wondering where and how did you guys learn? In theory I know how to, but I just never have in a car. I was thinking of renting some garbage car and just go mess around in a parking lot till I get it down. Any suggestions?

Hey learning standard in a car is nothing compared to learning to shift gears on an old motorbike with suicide shift (you gotta take yer hand off the handlebars and manually grab a shift **** on the side - today ya just "tip toe" it)

It's easy to drive stick unless yer one of those ppl who lack motor skills or have horrible hand eye co-ordination. One thing - dont pay so much attention to yer shifting that yer not watching where yer driving (dont look at the guages or the shift pattern sticker on the shifter - and be smooth - oh and dont over revv it like a kool kid). Know what yer doing physically in the car - dont over think it - just do it and have fun!!!!!!

Not sure about my first standard car, was back sometime when i was pre 17 cuz by then I had already driven a 1967 Malibu 427 with Muncie close ratio gears, 1988 BMW 325i cabriolet, POS Chevy Monza trunk version 4spd/4cyl, 442 Cutlass, 1988 Iroc, and some others. Not braggin ornutting, just cars run in my family, older bro and all.

The 325i BMW threw me for a loop tho cuz I was accustomed to using force to shift (muscle car trannies are cable/rods) but the BMW was hydralic clutch and hydralic shift so it was weird for me

i got the theory of it from my older brother and dad. then there was this game called stunt driver and it reuired you to properly learn to use the clutch other wise the car would stall out so i played that alot. and the first time i drove stick was a 4 cylinder precidia i took out with my little brother. lol took me a few minutes but i figured it out. it was nerve racking pulling out of the inclined parking spot backwards withthe dealer watching me. almost as nervous as the first time i lost my virginity. the second time was much easier

I learned by driving dirtbikes and four wheeleres. I knew how to drive my Manual car even before I got in it.

Well I bought what is still my first car and i bought it without even test driving it cuz I couldn;t drive manual shift at the time. I remember the guy sayin, "you wanna take her for a rip?"..and I said,"ummm how bout u drive cuz I have no clue how to drive manual." Anywaz I bought the car cuz he ripped it and he dropped it off on my dirveway and it took me 5 starts to get to the top of my driveway..lol..5 no joke...but I just took the car around the hood and within a few days I had it down no problem. I stalled my first time stopping going uphill after though. I'd say just DIY and take someone out with you in the car who can maybe give you some pointers

i bought my car not knowing how to drive stick, the owner dropped the car at my place and that's when i began to learn. my friend was there and taught me the basics to guide me, pretty much you'll easily learn it on your own. i learned in the civic i'm driving now.

i practiced on small streets near my house and in empty parking lots

Young gun can only hope to improve
few pointers....

master the gas pedal before you even touch the cluth, learn how to raise the rpm by 500 rpm and so on, then learn how to hold it steady at a certain speed (do it in an empty parking lot) then once u learn how to hold the rpm constant, learn where your clutch hooks, let it go really slowly, like millimeters at a time until the car wants to move, then just learn to release it smoothly while compensating with a lil gas
