Drug-resistant Salmonella possibly linked to ground turkey
Cargill Meat Solutions Corporation, a Springdale, Ark. establishment, is recalling approximately 36 million pounds of ground turkey products that may be contaminated with a multi-drug resistant strain of Salmonella Heidelberg, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today. A multi-state outbreak of antibiotic-resistant Salmonella Heidelberg has left 77 people ill and one person dead, according to a statement released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
While federal officials have declined to name the producer, and a recall has not been issued, the CDC says collaborative investigative efforts of state, local, and federal public health and regulatory agencies indicate that ground turkey is the likely source.
