Cops To Publicly Destroy Cars Used In Street Racing
Wednesday June 14, 2006
As Toronto Police investigate yet another apparent instance of dangerous street racing, their counterparts in York Region are about to take a massive step of their own in fighting the problem.
The solution - publicly destroying two cars involved in the illegal activity.
On Thursday, cops in the area north of the city will use special provisions of the law to junk the two vehicles that had been specially modified with a need for speed.
The cars were seized in 2003 and 2004 when cops caught them being used to tear down a stretch of highway.
It's all part of a section of the law called the Civil Remedies Act that grants the courts authority to freeze, seize and forfeit any evidence or proceeds used in an activity determined to be illegal or a danger to public safety. Once the Crown gets its hands on the goods, it's free to do whatever it wants with the items.
And in this case, that means graphically destroying both cars. It's the first time any souped-up automobiles will have been deliberately junked by the law to make a point.
But cops vow it won't be the last.
"Street racing is a dangerous, unlawful activity that puts innocent people at risk," warns York Regional Police Chief Armand La Barge in a statement. "This is what will happen to your prized possession if you continue to race on York Region roads."
Since 1999, 34 people have died as a result of street racing in the G.T.A.

I do hope that the former owners will get personal invitations to the public execution of their cars. Nothing like having friends and family present at such occasions.

Guys will revert to 80,s style of doing stuff . Get a shell gut it . Beef up the trans an diff . Nos it . No fancy paint seats or stereo. And go racing . If you loose it , the most expensive thing in it will be the nitrous kit . If you can pick up a coupla runs for a hundred bucks . The kit is paid for anyways ..77.

Well, if Harper gets his proposed legislation through, it's not just the car that will be going away. It will also be your money, your license, and maybe even your freedom going away, and that tends to drive up the costs far beyond that of simply losing a gutted shell of a car.

Well, if the police are ever chasing you, better make a run for it. At least then there's a chance you'll save your car.

^^^ That is what i was thinking! They just pressuring these racers to run away... lifetime suspension and jail time... HEY! if i run away from a cop.. i ain't street racing, iam just running away... they gonna suspend my license, write me a ticket and maybe jail time... same ! Atleast i won't get my car crushed...
alright think about it this way... they said something about 64 victims in 6 years have fallen to street racing... so now they want to crack down on these offenders and crush their cars to make sure they don't offend again... ALRIGHT! lets look at a bigger picture... how many murders, gang related activity, are rape crimes are there??? why don't we reinstate the death penalty, so we make sure they won't offend the second time!
SAME CONCEPT!
Harper just got on legislation, so he gotta show hes the man by laying all these bullshit laws..
Tickets whatever! don't care... but crushing other ppl's properties?? **** OFF... GO CATCH THE RAPISTS AND MURDERERS!!

And maybe you missed it, but they have been going after and catching the murderers, the rapists, the gangs, the gun-runners, etc. Did you really expect they would just ignore the street racers and their growing trail of death and injury in the meantime?
