Probably because it some what promoted street racing.
Pontiac has a history of adds like that and would get in hot water for some of them.
I remeber a billbord for the trans am in Detroit that had a picture of it and under it, it read "to woodward avenue with love"
Woodward ave was famous for street racing in the muscle car years.

Prolly banned cause it was chessy and obnoxious. Or maybe Lotus owners told the Ad Agency how gay they really looked.
Most Pontiac ads are geared like this and breed a "special" type of BUILT FOR DRIVERS driver, who stares at red dash lights too long.
