Afghan officials seize 200 tonnes of pot
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
KABUL, Afghanistan — Officials say they have uncovered 214 tonnes of marijuana in a massive drug bust in southern Afghanistan.
Deputy Interior Minister Lt.-Gen. Abdul Hadi Khalid says the marijuana was found by Afghan counternarcotics officers in Kandahar province Monday.
The drugs are estimated to be worth more than $400 million and were burned on site.
British Capt. Mike Finney, a NATO spokesman, confirmed the seizure. The top spokesman for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, Garrison Courtney, says he can’t think of any other bust that has netted that many tonnes of drugs.
