Question What is involved in rebuilding heads?

I have been looking for some LT4 heads but their not that easy to find used. I guess if I want to use them I will need to buy some new heads. What I was wondeirng is what is involved in porting, polishing, and changing the springs (that is about all you can do right?). Is this something that can be done at your home or will I need special tools/machines?

Thanks

have it done you'll be thankful, you can do it at home if you have the right die grinders, and experience, springs are easy with teh right tools

To be honest- you can port your heads- its not hard, grab a dremel and start grindin away metal.

BUT- to be honest again- there is no possible way that you can port your heads and get the performance you are looking for, UNLESS you are experienced with it and have a flowbench in your basement to verify how much you have to work on each chamber.

You are lookin at prolly around at least $1200 for a hand port work-

Be leary of buyin used heads unless you know the car they came off of- if someone is partin our the parts of their popped motor there is a chance that the heads might be warped pretty bad. That means you have to get them planed down which changes the CC of the combustion chamber.

My advice- just save your $$ and get new heads that you don't have to worry about-

Hmm buy some LT4 heads just to take them apart and have sent off. Or have some LT1 type heads already put together?

i'm rebuilding my heads, doing a valve, job, and port matching them. so far i've only taken it all apart and havent started any die grinding, but my autoshop teacher has experience...maybe you should see if there an autoshop at your college?

Getting custom grinds on all are very expensive.

A valve job and port match isn't hard. That can be done pretty easily and successfully, but when you start actually porting the head thats when you really need to know what you are doin-
