Test drove a H/C 383 LT1 Z
A friend of mine found a pretty clean M6 95 Z at a local dealer. They have it on consignment and didn't really know the details about the car. Today thay got a build sheet on the engine. It has [supposedly] a 383, ported stock heads, a custom grind crane cam with a nice lope (no specs,) Edelbrock TB, LT headers, 3" cat bk with a Chokemaster, NX 150 kit.
For looks it is a nice bright red (possibly torch red, but not origional), factory 96 SS hood with silver SS wheels on bald nitto 555Rs.
I told my friend that they are asking way to much to start: 14,000.
If the car has what it says it has I would pay 8,000 for it 9 tops.
The road test:
3 people in the car (my friend, myself, and the sales man).
My friend got on it in second and third, I asked if it was floored, He said "not really".
He slowed down and floored it in first through third..... It pulled OK
I drove it back and got on it in second, I hit it at about 3500 and ran it up to about 6200. It just felt pretty damn sluggish.
I know we had quite a bit of weigt in the car, and the stock 3.42 gear (I am assuming) didnt help, but I was very dissapointed.
It did not have the torque that I expected out of a 383 LT1. Stock LT1s have gobs of torque. The throttle response also seemed a little sluggish. Reving it in neautral, it seemed lazy.
Does this sound like the BS flag should be raised on the engine?
I think that it is a poor running bolt on car with a cam and a bad tune (or no tune). It may have had a 383 in it at one time, I dont think it does now.
I dont think that it pulled any harder than a bolt on Z.
I told my friend that I would not pay any more than 4500-5000 for it as it sits, and that is bieng optimistic.
