the LT1 has a balancer hub thats pressed onto the crank snout. the balancer itself is bolted onto this hub by three bolts...either 1/2" or 9/16" or 13 or 14 mm...i forget what it was. but you dont need to remove the balancer hub, just the balancer.

Here's a good tip that will do you good. While you have them off, take a 'rat tail' and take off the slightest amount of metal from the inside of the balancer and or the crank snub. Basically all you are going to do is get it shiny again. Get it so it still fits snugly, but not so tight that you need to use the bolts to press it back on. That way if you ever need to do it again the balancer won't be such a PITA to off.
And I am sure that Arch will chime in and argue as he usually does and say that its not a good idea and that it will wreck it and destroy the function of it. And to the smallest amount perhaps, but since it isn't a $50,000 race motor and is street driven I see no problem with it. I am sure that the rust that is forming on the outside of the balancer causes more imbalance than takin 1/100th off the inside of the pulley.
I did it to my car, did it to my friends cars and have yet to see any kind of side effect other than making it a lot easier to work on the next time.
Arch- keep in mind what you are takin about is a typical balancer- the LT1's its integrated into the crank pulley.

that's what the manual says to do. The balancer still has the rubber ring which is dangerous since when it fails the outer part comes off (which the lt1 engined camaro we had at the dealership did)
