FS: 1990 Jetta GTX - 16V - Recaros - BBS wheels - All Original - Near Mint
1990 Volkswagen Jetta GTX
Engine: 2.0L 16V - 134hp. with 133ft. lbs of torque.
Mileage: Somewhere around 240,000kms - the cluster shows 307,000 but cluster was replaced recently (have the documentation to prove)
Transmission: Close ratio 5 speed.
Colour: Red
Interior: Grey power Recaro seats
Options: Power windows, power door locks, power heated mirrors, power seats, multi-function computer (l/100kms, outside temperature, avg. speed, time of travel, etc...), cruise control, sunroof, foglights, etc...
THE GTX
This is the rare GTX model Jetta which came from the factory with the high-revving yet incredibly efficient (7L/100kms highway and around 8.5L/100kms city on 87 octane) and reliable 2.0L 16V engine. These cars came equipped with 4-wheel disc brakes, 15" BBS alloys, uprated sway bars, specially valved struts, and more aggressive coil springs. It was the favourite of Autobahn junkies who still needed 4 doors and a large trunk to haul all of their luggage in. Other niceties include a Fuba roof-mount antenna, leather wrapped steering wheel and handbrake gaiter as well as GTX specific 16V badging.
BODY
This particular car is in excellent shape - there is no rust to speak of except for a couple small spots where the paint has bubbled. The colour is not a factory colour but suits the car perfectly. It is a base red with some orange metallic. Paint was applied professionally and looks great. The body of the car is extremely solid due to annual Krown rust protection - car also has only seen 2 winters since it was new. The only annoying blemishes on the car are stone chips on the hood and the leading edges of the fenders - these have been covered over using colour matched vinyl - there is no rust underneath the vinyl - it looks alright, but it hinders the car from looking completely mint - I have installed a bug deflector to cover up the vinyl. The car has been updated with big bumpers including the 16V specific foglights (which need to be wired up) and 16V lip spoiler. The trunk lid also features a body coloured hard spoiler (missing its plugs of course).
All the lighting is stock - taillights, signals, marker lights, etc... (changed out the Altezzas and clear lights that the previous owner had installed - these items are included). The floors are incredibly solid and the original rubberized undercoating is still intact.
INTERIOR
The interior of the car is in great shape. The original power Recaro seats are still in close to mint condition and have no bolster wear or rips. The dashboard however, has a few cracks due to the overapplication of Armour All. All the interior features work (except for the DS rear power window), mirrors, seats still function as if the car were new. The AC blows cold and has been converted to a more environmentally friendly R-134A. The cruise control works as well as the nifty MFA multi-function computer which tells you your average speed, distance travelled, outdoor temperature, fuel mileage in L/100kms, etc... All wipers, turn-signals, horn, etc... still work on the car as well. I've taken the time also to re-wire the underdash and trunk area to restore it to as it were when the car was stock - this involved the removal of a non-functioning security system.
STEREO
The car features a competition-style stereo system. The head-unit is a JVC KD-LH1000 with a liquid crystal screen which also comes with a key-chain remote control - specs on the head-unit can be found here: http://mobile.jvc.com/product....age=1
The head-unit powers two dash speakers and two Pioneer 6X9's which sit on the rear parcel shelf in Fusion boxes. In the trunk lives a Power Acoustik PA2-520 520 Watt amp which powers two 12" Alpine Type E subwoofers in a Alpine box. The system really pounds.
DRIVETRAIN
The drivetrain is also in great shape. The 2.0L 16V engine pulls hard and revs smoothly. The engine has been treated to a diet of synthetic oil for the majority of its life. The transmission shifts nicely - no grinds in any gears and is geared perfectly for quick acceleration. The shifter probably needs the bushings replaced - there is some sloppiness to it and the reverse lock-out doesn't seem to be working the way that it should (spring needs to be replaced) - the bushings cost no more than $30 from VW and should fix this. The clutch was replaced last year and still has plenty of grab left. There are no leaking fluids. The rad fans still work as intended (a rarity in these cars). The waterpump was recently replaced. The steering is tight and free of play. The brakes were recently replaced and stop the car smoothly and quickly without any shudder, however, the e-brake cables need to be replaced. The timing belt was replaced 75,000kms ago - and would be due for replacement soon - the belt itself is crack free and still in decent shape but for peace of mind it should be replaced as recommended by Volkswagen (every 100,000kms). The exhaust system is still in good shape and features a header as well as a stainless steel performance muffler - the system is very sporty and throaty but not excessively loud. The engine bay is dirty from years of rust protection but everything remains as it was installed in Wolfsburg, Germany.
WHEELS
The car comes with the original 15" BBS RA alloy wheels as well as Bridgestone Blizzaks on 14" steel wheels for an easy change in for winter.
OTHER
It should be noted that this car has a clean title - it has never been wrecked, however, it was stolen and stripped of its Recaros and BBS whels and has since had those items replaced (new in 1995) by VW of Richmond Hill.
PRICE
All of this for the bargain basement price of $3400 (or best offer). The car comes E-tested but not certified. If you would like more pictures or would like to set-up and appointment to see the car or test-drive it please contact me via e-mail at lowblackdub@gmail.com
For certification the car needs:
- DS rear window need fixing
- plate lights
- lower ball-joints
- E-brake cables

Back to the top - I have a video available of 0-60 in this car if anyone would like it. I can host it on YouTube if there is demand.
A video of a walk-around of the GTX - sorry that YouTube's quality sucks. I can send the high-res version if you send me your e-mail:
YouTube - GTX Walk-Around
Also a leisurely run up to 100km/h:
YouTube - GTX: 0 to 100km/h
