Fiberglass Speaker Boxes

Has anyone here made them? I've heard that they don't produce as good of sound as a wooden box of proper thickness. Any thoughts on this? Can you increase sound quality by adding insulation on the inside before you start adding the fiberglass?

I assume you can get the supplys needed at a local Home Depot or RONA to make one (if not let me know).

If you have any tips please feel free to post. I am considering building one for my car eventually (mainly because it would weigh a lot less than a wooden box).

Danno, this question may be better posted over at www.canadiancaraudio.com

On a side note, I have heard people say that MDF is still the way to go to reproduce the best sound. I am not sure how the acoustics are on FG vs MDF, but if I had to guess, FG would be the mostly likely candidate for sounding tinny.

a fiber glass enclosure can have good sound quality (even better than mdf!) if it is built right. If you are planning to make one and have never done it before (i am guessing you haven't because you're asking where to get materials) chances are that it wont be that good. Its a lot of work to get the right airspace and tuning (if ported) for a fiber glass enclosure. I would go with the previous posters advice and build a mdf box with a cosmetic trim made of fg. MDF is easier to work with, can be finished faster and easier to calculate size and tuning, so you might want to try using that material first. Good luck.
