People just like them because they make a funny noise.
They may be a little easier on your turbo, but my car is 20 years old with the original turbo and it is still in great shape.
I give that guy props for doing a driveway build like that and using what he had lying around.
That is grass roots hot rodding right there.

Its not a bad idea to have one just not necessary.
Some others have a different thought on this and I`m not an expert on turbos but I have seen dozens of GNs and other cars with boost levels well over 20 psi with no bov and no issues.
Just makes a different noise when you lift.

More effective on a manual transmission car, because my GN is Automatic (as are the rest of them) the only time you'll get the Turbo "Sneeze" is when your done boosting the snot out of it.
the damage you can cause is to the thrust bearings inside the cartrige, but it's much worse with the manual because your on and off the throttle so much.
I try to roll off the throttle so the sneeze is not so severe, but to be honest Turbo Longevity is not an issue with the buick guys, the only things we see are burned exhaust wheels from a lean condition (Nitrous) and anything going through the turbo is never good...
I might also not we are having great sucess with the Ball Bearing turbos, they spool up almost instantly.
