Up 'til 2005, Chicago was known mainly for wind, hot dogs, and the Sears Tower. Then, in October of '05, the Chicago White Sox erased an 87-year bad luck streak. More importantly (for tuning enthusiasts at least) 2005 was also the year that the Formula D drift series put Chicago on the map as a drift hot spot by staging one of their six competitions in the Windy City. But for enthusiasts like Steve Ngan, the drift scene has been alive and well in the Chicago area for a long, long time. Ngan, one of the proprietors of a tuning shop called Drift Avenue, hasn't only been preaching the virtues of the sideways sport, but has been walking the walk via his own drift-spec Mazda RX-7. So it was only natural that we came across Steve and his RX-7 at the Formula D Chicago event earlier this year. And while the smoke-filled action on the track entertained the Chicago crowd, Steve entertained us with the breakdown on this month's ShowStopper feature car.
Steve's RX-7 has not always has a J-spec/Drift-spec modification theme; after several years of ownership – with moderate modifications here and there, Steve decided on a major revamp in 2002. The result is clear from the images you see here – a stunning JDM themed FD3S Mazda RX-7 that's rare in the Midwest or anywhere else in the country. Steve conceived the build up to take advantage of his resources at Drift Avenue as well as a still developing drift scene – a scene that was both pre-Formula D and even before D1 staged its first U.S. event in December of 2003. Part of those resources included expert rotary engine tuning skills, so it was natural that the 2-rotor Mazda 13B-REW rotary engine would be taken apart and rebuilt for a higher state of tune. After street porting and a high performance apex seal replacement, Drift Avenue equipped the RX-7 with a custom turbo kit with a custom front mount intercooler. Supporting the hairdryer is a cast list that includes a Drift Avenue stainless steel manifold, downpipe, and dual Tial wastegates. An HKS air cleaner filters out unwanted particles and an HKS blow-off valve releases unwanted boost pressure during shifts on Chicago's famous Lake Shore Drive. After the rotors are through with combustion process, exhaust gases are quickly dispatched by an Apex-I GT spec exhaust system.
Naturally, adding increased air pressure requires a similar fuel adjustment and an K2RD fuel rail accommodates 1600cc secondary injectors while -6 fuel lines and an Aeromotive fuel pressure regulator make sure the proper fuel is delivered through them. Controlling the complex task of managing fuel and combustion in the 13B-REW's two rotary housings is a Microtech LTX8S standalone engine management system.
With the hardest part of the project finished, Steve turned his attention to enhancing the handling and braking properties of a car that would have almost 500 hp. Tein HA coilovers were fitted to address the suspension department while Brembo cross-drilled brake rotors and Hawk brake pads would haul the FD to quick stops. Simultaneously, Steve began addressing the exterior aesthetics with careful research into JDM aftermarket parts. After he finished looking through countless Option magazines, videos, and JDM websites, Steve put his order in for a RE Amemiya N1 front bumper cover, as well as a RE Amemiya carbon fiber under sweep, rear skirt, and rear carbon fiber diffuser. To compliment the Amemiya parts, Steve added a C West carbon fiber headlight kit, MAZDASPEED side skirts, and a rare Scoot vented hood and an equally uncommon FEED adjustable rear spoiler. The finishing touches included turn signals and rear tail lights from a '99 RX-7 (Japan-only). Finally, the whole package was sprayed a custom "Corvette blue" and lightweight bronze Volk TE37s wrapped with Bridgestone Potenza SO-3 rubber were bolted on.
Inside, the makeover is sparse in the performance tradition. The Recardo racing bucket seat is the biggest giveaway that this is no ordinary RX-7, as is the Cusco 5-point roll cage. The ubiquitous (in JDM themed cars anyway), green Takata 4-point racing harness adds a splash of color to the otherwise businesslike black interior of the FD. Staring straight ahead from the drivers seat, Steve's eyes can train on a variety of informative gauges or the big MAZDASPEED steering wheel in front of him. Information central includes Blitz boost and Blitz water temperature gauges mounted in a Borders dual gauge pod. A HKS EVC EZ boost controller allows Steve to turn up or down the wick on the turbo system while a MOMO shift **** is the main switch for choosing between gears 1-5. Under the familiar glass hatch, a Cusco rear strut tie bar has been added for additional suspension stability as well as for dress-up purposes. Finally, a modest Pioneer head unit and speakers are used when the tunes of a 480 hp rotary engine get boring – which is to say rarely.
Even before Steve's RX-7 was finished, the project started attracting attention. It wasn't long before the cameras started snapping and the RX-7 started to attract attention much beyond its Windy City roots. In fact, the FD has posed for the lenses of Modified and Super Street Magazine already, as well as other publications. So while Formula D invaded Chicago in 2005, "Drift Avenue" has been a spot for enthusiasts like Steve and his '93 Mazda RX-7 for years. And with the explosion of the sport of drifting across the U.S., we won't be surprised if we see more "drift avenues" popping up.

yup, sick *** ride. I posted this here a long time ago once when the owner put it up in eBay for sale. I don't think he sold it, although he did put it up twice...probably didn't like the low ball offers.
if i bought the car, i'd paint it Chapmionship White or Alpine White:thumbsup:
