PICS: Poor Guys Performance
What some will do, but , who cares...
Hi Guys, this is my first post. I've read about and checked out many of the top cars on this site - real nice. However I noticed that many of the top performance cars are financially out of reach of the average working guy (like me).
Soooo I thought I'd start a thread for the 'poor guys performance car' and what better way to kick off then with my own motor. She's a 79 TransAm with a 383ci (6272cc) Small Block Chevy V8. The body used to be real straight and shiny but 14 years of street action has taken its toll. I decided to take the Mad Max Interceptor look complete with matt black paint and rust... and for performance enhancement I added a Holset H1E turbocharger (£50 from a 40 tonne truck) and a huge (£25) intercooler from an ERF. She currently runs 12psi of boost and makes 550-600RWHP. I guess torque should be 600-700lb/ft. These mods were done on a sub £1000 budget. I have zero experience with car modding, hadn't even done an oil change myself before this project - and I couldn't weld!
Basically if I can do it (in England of all places) anyone can.
Oh and before anyone cries out its a wreck and has no bling... I agree. Its all the more insulting when it rumbles past nice new shiny 911's.

1979 Trans Am - 383ci, 6272cc, 9:1CR, Dart Iron Heads, Holley 750DP, Victor Jr Inlet, Holset H1E Truck Turbo, ERF Truck Intercooler, 40mm Wastegate.
The 'headers' which come off the cylinder heads are shorties off a GM truck. They were about £70 for the pair. I flipped them over to face upwards and forwards. They needed a whack with a hammer here and there to clear the suspension... but nothing drastic. The pipework connecting the two banks and flowing into the turbo, was made from mild steel seam pipe and is 6mm thick. Its real heavy but I wanted something to hold the heat. I sourced some 45* and 90* elbows and basically used them as pivots to get everything to line up. I believe that stainless has a nasty tendency to swell and shear pins with the heat... and it was too expensive anyway!
Note direct injection Nitrous Oxide maybe I'll add it to the turbo...

the car won't handle or brake, or do anyting else except for accelerate good/fast.
That's what would annoy me the most... And I can understand that a car can look "not so nice" but this thing is just a POS IMO.
