Building an awesome set of twins isn't easy. Building a sequel to them is even harder. If you're not careful, one second you are responsible for Ashley and Marie Kate; then Kelly Osbourne pops out and you went from hero to zero. Needless to say, Signal Auto had their work cut out for them after following the famed Signal Twins.

If you think about the Signal Twins their track record is impressive. They graced almost as many magazine covers as Pamela Anderson's twins and they did it with way less silicone, becoming two of the most recognizable cars in drifting. Signal has never been a company to continue to push the envelope and that's exactly what they have done with their 2004 V35 Skyline Coupe, the car known stateside as the G35 Coupe.

When Signal first went to work on the Skyline nobody had really done an over-the-top rendition of the Nissan. There were some VIP-influenced rides cruising Japan and a few twin-turbo versions, but nothing like what Signal had in mind. No, if history has taught us anything it would be that the French are always going to lose when a war is involved and if it comes out of the Signal shop in Osaka, Japan it's going to look fast and drive faster.

It's Signal Auto so of course the paint was going to be bright and of the orange variety. Scorching the retinas in this Skyline's case is a House of Kolor candy orange hue that covers the body and Signal's own front bumper. As nice as the HOK mix might have been sprayed, it's really the trick airbrush job by Craig Fraser of Kal Koncepts/Air Syndicate that sets the paintjob off.

From the mural of the dragon sitting on the Signal Auto carbon fiber hood which was painted by Fraser in front crowds at the 2005 Tokyo Auto Salon to the smallest details on the Kal Koncepts spade logo on the trunk lid, it's the tiniest detail with each stroke of the airbrush that tells the story of uniqueness and customization with this Skyline.

The bright orange color and crafty workmanship with the brush make the Skyline a rolling piece of artwork, yet the story of show and go continue when the hood is popped. Forget a twin-turbo VQ35 or any other of the wide variety of modifications available to make the six-cylinder push serious power; this Nissan is packing the ponies in a different package then might be expected.

What seems like the obvious swap? The tried and true RB26DETT of course; except upon close inspection under the hood you'll notice there are two sparkplugs missing. Rather than stick with a six-banger and the size and weight issues that accompany it, Signal salvaged an SR20DET from an S15 and neatly placed it between the fenders of their Skyline. It's not your everyday Silvia engine either.

The bottom end of the SR20 has been given the stroked treatment with new pistons, crank and rods from Toda to increase the displacement to 2.2-liters. On the top end the head was ported and polished by Signal and fitted with Trust bump sticks adding lift and duration to keep up with the head's increased airflow. All of the extra airflow would be greatly needed to handle what would be hanging from the side of the four-cylinder.

Replacing the stock T28 turbocharger is a TD06-25G from Trust. Lots of air needs lots of fuel to prevent a meltdown so Signal upgraded to 700cc injectors receiving all the gas they can handle from a Sard fuel pump. Managing the boost is a GReddy ProfecB electronic boost controller while an HKS F-Con V-Pro is the brains of the operation. Incoming air comes to the turbo from a Signal Super Surge intake and then gets routed to a Signal intercooler held in a custom V-mount configuration. On the other side of the turbo exhaust exits through a Tanabe 80mm down pipe then heads to the Tanabe Concept G Blue 80mm exhaust system before being let out of the 100mm tip. The whole combination is good for 450 horsepower at 1.2 bar of boost.

Helping the Skyline to lay low is a set of Tanabe Sustec Pro Seven coilovers. Sitting on the perches of the 16-way adjustable dual-tube dampeners is the new Tanabe Electric Active Suspension. The high-tech TEAS system adjusts the dampening rates based on vehicle speed, doing it as quickly as 1/100th of a second. To help keep the Nissan chassis stiffer than a dose of Viagra and a night at the Playboy mansion, the crew at Signal stitch-welded the seams and fabricated up a custom roll cage.

Since BFGoodrich is the official tire of the Signal team, the choice in rubber was an easy one. Sized 245/45/19 in the front and 265/45/19 in the rear, g-Force KD tires wrapped around SSR Professor SP1 black wheels with a polished lip handle the gripping responsibilities. Big power demands big brakes so Endless brakes with slotted rotors and six-pot calipers were installed on all four corners.

A completely gutted interior is more race and too much bling wouldn't be functional on the track. Finding a happy medium between form and function, Signal dropped in a pair of carbon Kevlar seats to replace the factory buckets. There might not be any carpet, but certain luxuries were added like an Alpine CD/MP3/DVD head unit and an Alpine LCD monitor mounted in a custom fiberglass dash were not overlooked.

Following up an impressive performance is tough, just ask the brilliant minds that brought us all Matrix Reloaded. But in the case of Signal Auto's '04 Skyline, they continued on their tradition of building awesome cars that do more than just look good.

Wow! I'm not really a fan of the exterior designs, but at the same time I love it.

Not bad, I like those cars, but the paint's a little much. I'd still take it and paint it black.
